Estimating the cost of caring for people with cancer at the end of life: A modelling study.

Round J, Jones L, Morris S.

Using a modelling-based approach this study estimated the costs for lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer patients at the end of life in England and Wales. The estimated costs for treating people with these cancers at the end of life is £641 million. People with breast and prostate cancer have the highest expected cost at £12,663 and £14,859 per person respectively. Informal care giving accounts for around one-third of all costs. This study concludes that the cost to society of providing care to people with cancer at the end of their lives is high and much of this is borne by informal care givers.
