Remembering Dr. Robert Sladek

A few days ago, I learned the sad news that Dr. Robert Sladek had passed away.
Although our paths crossed only a few times in life and in academia, he left a deep impression on me. Dr. Robert Sladek was one of those rare individuals whose intellect and scholarly rigor were evident even in a few conversations.
Dr. Sladek, a leading figure at the McGill Genome Centre in Montreal, made important contributions to the genetics of type 2 diabetes. He was among the early leaders in applying genome-wide approaches to complex disease, and his work helped identify genetic loci associated with type 2 diabetes. He was widely respected in the field.
When I was a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Constantin Polychronakos in Montreal, I had several opportunities to discuss research questions with Dr. Sladek. I quickly realized that I was speaking with an exceptional scientist. His way of thinking was broad, deep, and careful. He approached scientific questions step by step, breaking them down patiently and considering them from multiple angles. That intellectual rigor left a lasting impression on me.
Later, when I was preparing to take a position in Texas, he shared his thoughts with me on academic development. I remembered that conversation for many years and understood it as a sign of his generosity and sincere concern. Looking back, I appreciate even more his view that academic growth depends not only on individual effort, but also on strong institutions and a stimulating environment.
The last time I saw him was a few years ago, when I was visiting Montreal and went to see him. On that occasion, we spoke less about research and more about everyday life. He mentioned how quickly housing prices in Montreal had risen, and how good houses would sell almost as soon as they were listed. I still remember that conversation with warmth. It was a simple but very human moment.
My interactions with Dr. Sladek were limited, but the impression he left on me was lasting. Through only a few encounters, he showed me the qualities of a thoughtful scientist and a serious scholar.
I write these words in memory of Dr. Robert Sladek.
