{"id":1249,"date":"2016-04-16T05:42:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-16T05:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/tc\/?p=1249"},"modified":"2016-04-16T05:42:21","modified_gmt":"2016-04-16T05:42:21","slug":"germany-tobacco-graphic-health-warnings-to-finally-turn-the-tide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/tc\/2016\/04\/16\/germany-tobacco-graphic-health-warnings-to-finally-turn-the-tide\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany: tobacco graphic health warnings to finally turn the tide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a welcome step forward from the weak text-only \u2018smoking can be deadly\u2019 and similar warnings that have thus far graced cigarette packs, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/black-lungs-and-rotting-teeth-to-grace-german-cigarette-packs\/a-19127618\" target=\"_blank\">Germany is set to introduce graphic health warnings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite tentative progress in recent years, Germany has historically been one of Europe\u2019s poster children for tobacco control legislative failure. That reputation may begin to change from 20 May, when gory pictures of black lungs, dead bodies and other consequences of smoking will be plastered over two thirds of the surface area of cigarette packs, in line with European Union regulations.<\/p>\n<p>While the news is welcome, much remains to be done: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeancancerleagues.org\/images\/TobaccoControl\/TCS_2013_in_Europe_13-03-14_final_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Germany has long languished near the bottom of European countries<\/a>\u00a0for its many shortcomings in tobacco control policy and implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Although some smoke free legislation is in place, lax advertising restrictions have allowed tobacco companies to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2014\/mar\/12\/marlboro-marketing-campaign-aimed-young-people-cigarettes-report\" target=\"_blank\">continue to use advertising billboards<\/a>\u00a0in Germany \u2013 one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dkfz.de\/en\/presse\/pressemitteilungen\/2015\/dkfz-pm-15-49-Tobacco-Atlas-Germany-2015-New-data-new-facts.php\" target=\"_blank\">only two European countries<\/a> which have not yet outlawed such a blatant violation of the FCTC. Even neighbouring Austria, the perennial \u2018rogue state\u2019 of European tobacco control, does not allow cigarette billboards.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dkfz.de\/en\/presse\/pressemitteilungen\/2015\/dkfz-pm-15-49-Tobacco-Atlas-Germany-2015-New-data-new-facts.php\" target=\"_blank\">German Cancer Research Center<\/a>, 121,000 people die from smoking-related causes each year, representing 13.5% of all deaths in Germany.
