Then in marched the piper with Professor Scott Murray (COMPASS Collaborative) behind, carrying a platter &#8211; not with a haggis in it, but with copies of the new journal weighing it down.\u00a0 Placing the platter on a table, Scott welcomed the guests and addressed the new journal with Burns-inspired verse:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith apologies to Rabbie Burns\u201d, he began, raising a glass \u201cto the new BMJ journal\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFair blue is your honest, sonsie face,<br \/>\nNew chieftain in the BMJ-race!<br \/>\nAboon them a&#8217; ye tak your place,<br \/>\nHeart, Thorax or Gut,<br \/>\nWeel are ye worthy of inspection,<br \/>\nYou Noble, Bill Noble perfection!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The groaning trencher there ye fill,<br \/>\nYour articles like a distant hill,<br \/>\nYour research will help us heal the dying<br \/>\nIn great time o need,<br \/>\nWhile thro your pores wisdom distils<br \/>\nLike amber bead.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ye Pow&#8217;rs, wha mak mankind your care,<br \/>\nAnd dish them out their bill o fare,<br \/>\nAuld Scotland wants nae Lancet child ,<br \/>\n<\/em><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>nae comic from another larder<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But Mark the doctors, sic haggis-fed,<br \/>\nThe trembling wards resound their treads<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Fair blue is your honest, sonsie face,<br \/>\nNew chieftain o the BMJ-race!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI now invite you all to toast the new blue one, the BMJ Supportive &amp; Palliative Care and hand you over to BMJ Editor Fiona Godlee, the mother of the new child born today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The guests enjoyed the entertainment, some, more than others, understanding the finer points contained in the Scottish phrases.<\/p>\n<p>Scott then handed over to Fiona, \u201cmother of the new bairn born today.\u201d She toasted the piper, commenting on the irony of celebrating the birth of a journal about end of life care.\u00a0 She discussed the significance of the launch before handing over to Dr. Alex Jadad (BMJ advisory board member) from Canada, who offered an amusing international perspective on the launch.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Bill Noble spoke, explaining his vision for the title, and introducing Associate Editors Professor Irene Higginson (King\u2019s College London) and Dr Geoff Mitchell (University of Queensland) and others on the editorial board. The piper then led the guests to a most enjoyable dinner in the elegant halls of the Royal College of Physicians, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to everyone who contributed to a very successful launch.
