I watched you get cancer,
\nAnd sadness became a sister to me.
\nEach birthday became a goal
\nBut every time the cake came out you\u2019d say no
\nWordlessly I thought you\u2019d given up,
\nA small part saying no to cake- and more.<\/p>\n

But now you tell me you can\u2019t blow out
\nThe candles.
\nPanicked I look at your chest
\nMy eyes X-rays in to your
\nInsides.
\nWatching your chest heave,
\nIt takes me a moment to hear your
\nBubbling laughter.<\/p>\n

No, you laugh again,
\nAlmost choking with humour.
\nAlways quick to see the funny side.
\n-I\u2019ve always loved that about you-
\nYou said: I just didn\u2019t want to make a wish.<\/p>\n

Still smiling, you say that –
\nEvery wish should be about asking for more
\nBut having cancer
\nReally made you appreciate
\nWhat you had. So you told me.
\nYou didn\u2019t need another wish.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll always remember that conversation
\nSeeing the love in your eyes
\nDespite a face that has changed so much.
\nI\u2019m not you, so I close my eyes<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ll always wish for one more day
\nWith you.<\/p>\n
