Thanks in part to the growing Medical\u00a0Humanities movement, many medical schools now encourage the reading of\u00a0literature and the study of art to gain insights into the human condition.<\/p>\n<p>A serious content for comics is not new but representation of illness in graphic\u00a0novels is an increasing trend. The melding of text and visuals in graphic fiction\u00a0and non-fiction has much to offer medical professionals, students and, indeed,\u00a0patients. Among the growing number of graphic novels, a sub-genre exploring the\u00a0patients&#8217; and the carers&#8217; experiences of illness or disability has emerged.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Comics and Medicine: Medical\u00a0Narrative in Graphic Novels\u00a017th June 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>School of Advanced Study, Institute of English\u00a0Studies, University of London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Confirmed keynote lectures by\u00a0Paul Gravett and Marc Zaffran<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one-day interdisciplinary conference aims to explore medical narrative in\u00a0graphic novels and comics.\u00a0Papers and posters are invited on issues related to, but not restricted to, the<\/p>\n<p>following themes:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022What motivates authors to produce graphic narratives with medical content?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022How does the audience for this growing genre differ from traditional markets\u00a0for so-called \u2018pathographies\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022What additional insights can graphic narratives offer into healthcare compared\u00a0with literature and film?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022What international trends are discernible in the production and reception of\u00a0medical graphic narratives?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022What are the ethical implications of using graphic narratives to disseminate\u00a0public health messages?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022What are the strengths of graphic fiction in bioethics conversations? In\u00a0conversations between patients and health care workers?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022How have patients (and patient communities) turned to graphic fiction to\u00a0communicate health care and advocacy information to other patients, their\u00a0family and surrounding community, and their physicians?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022How do patient-created graphic fictions\/narratives differ from physician-or\u00a0health-care industry-created graphic narratives?
