So far about 100 films from the Trust&#8217;s vast archive of film and video have been digitalised and can be viewed by anyone, free-of-charge, on-line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A brief glance at the titles led me to a fascinating insight into how the British Medical Association, in 1967, tried to engage with the public about growing concerns regarding childhood obesity. This resource will shortly be\u00a0available via Flash Player which should make access easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/catalogue.wellcome.ac.uk\/search\/a?searchtype=Y&amp;searcharg=electronic+resource&amp;SORT=D&amp;searchscope=3&amp;submit.x=30&amp;submit.y=14\"><span>http:\/\/catalogue.wellcome.ac.uk\/search\/a?searchtype=Y&amp;searcharg=electronic+resource&amp;SORT=D&amp;searchscope=3&amp;submit.x=30&amp;submit.y=14<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Full details, from Christy, follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><!--more-->The Wellcome Library is digitising its film and video archive.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Previously, films and videos could only be viewed at the Library\u2019s premises, but digitisation will provide easy and immediate access to a global audience, enabling vastly more people to see the evolution of medicine and health over the past 100 years and to learn about the use of film as a communication tool in the medical sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of the fascinating titles being made available online include <em>War Neuroses<\/em><\/span><span>, showing soldiers in the First World War suffering from \u201cshell shock\u201d at Netley and Seale Hayne military hospitals, <em>Craniectomy<\/em><\/span><span>, a 1929 silent film detailing that particular surgical procedure, and <em>The Five<\/em><\/span><span>, a 1970s educational cartoon from the British Medical Association film archive (acquired by the Library in 2005) about the perils of not getting one\u2019s feet measured properly.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The collection ranges from instructional films made for medical professionals to public information films dealing with such subjects as mass immunisation, the introduction of the NHS, and obesity, with films from as early as 1913.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Over 100 hours of moving images will be made freely available in a variety of formats on the\u00a0Wellcome Library\u00a0website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.wellcome.ac.uk\">http:\/\/library.wellcome.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0and through <\/span><span><span class=\"MsoHyperlink\"><span>JISC&#8217;s Film and Sound Online<\/span><\/span><\/span><a name=\"P6_601\"><\/a><a name=\"_Hlt165192235\"><\/a><a name=\"_Hlt165192234\"><\/a><span> (FSOL)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmandsound.ac.uk\">http:\/\/www.filmandsound.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0website during 2009.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>For further information about this project, and some sample film, please visit\u00a0the Wellcome Film\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.wellcome.ac.uk\/film\">http:\/\/library.wellcome.ac.uk\/film<\/a> website.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment-->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m grateful to Christy Henshaw for letting me know about an exciting new project from the Wellcome Trust.
