Below we provide both a text summary and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4cyc-hbDZRg&amp;feature=youtu.be\">video<\/a> summer from Dr. Gallagher.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Noelle Gallagher 2 minute video for BMJ: Medical Humanities\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4cyc-hbDZRg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In this essay, I suggest that the rhetoric of today\u2019s breast cancer culture\u2014with its sentimental depictions of women in pink and its encouragement of \u201cpositive thinking\u201d in patients\u2014may actually have had its roots in the literature of the long eighteenth century.\u00a0 While cancer had long been connected with the emotions in early modern culture, the eighteenth century saw it associated with intense positive emotions (like love) as well as negative feelings (like jealousy or rage). I argue that as the 1700s wore on, breast cancer in particular became an important means of dramatizing the dangers of excessive feeling, as moralizing treatises and sentimental novels associated the development of breast cancer or ovarian <a href=\"https:\/\/mesowatch.com\/mesothelioma\/\">mesothelioma<\/a> with female emotional self-indulgence, and portrayed feminine self-control as the only form of resistance against the disease.\u00a0 I conclude by suggesting that these eighteenth-century exhortations to stoicism anticipate today&#8217;s &#8220;pink ribbon&#8221; culture, with its insistence that women with cancer &#8220;stay positive&#8221; no matter how angry or distressed they may feel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Bio: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Noelle Duckmann Gallagher <\/strong>is Senior Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century Literature and Culture at the University of Manchester.\u00a0 She works on the representation of the body and disease in eighteenth-century print culture.
