Hear more about the work in this short audio clip:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-2521-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2020\/08\/Expressions-of-gratitude.m4a?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2020\/08\/Expressions-of-gratitude.m4a\">https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2020\/08\/Expressions-of-gratitude.m4a<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><strong>SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Drawing on a rich archive of over 1500 letters dating from 1905 to 1963, Day gives examples of a variety of forms of gratitude, including donations, gifts, and \u2013 most valuable of all \u2013 information. Letters from the almoners were written in a way that made patients feel cared about long after their discharge from the sanatorium. Day discusses how gratitude as a moral imperative was a lasting legacy of the voluntary hospital system. The correspondence also reflects the almoners\u2019 struggles to disentangle their financial role from their social work \u2013 a predicament that led to the term \u2018almoner\u2019 becoming anachronistic after the health service was nationalised. In the last part of the paper, Day analyses the semantic strategies in the letters, showing how they changed in the 1950s from personalised, bespoke, first-person missives to corporate correspondence.\u00a0 She puts forward recommendations for relationship building in contemporary healthcare based on insights from the gratitude expressed in the letters.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2523 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2020\/08\/CIM_7446-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Giskin Day, with medium length brown hair, scarf and glasses, laughing in bright light.
