Publicity material for the meeting promises an opportunity to &#8220;explore<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>emotion and\u00a0communication in a medical setting\u00a0through theatre&#8221;. This enticing and still relatively novel approach to medical educational meetings will hopefully attract both the converts and the curious to what looks likely to be a provocative and lively evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Nell Dunn, the play&#8217;s author, Trevor Walker, the play\u2019s director,\u00a0TV and news presenter Anna Ford and\u00a0Jed Mercuio, doctor turned author and screenwriter of TV series \u2018Bodies\u2019 taking part in a panel\u00a0discussion after the staging of two\u00a0\u2018Cancer Tales\u2019,\u00a0this evening is surely a must for anyone within traveling distance interested in finding out what incorporating the arts and humanities into medical education means in action. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cancer Tales tells the stories of five women and their journey through\u00a0cancer.\u00a0The plays are based on conversations that author Nell Dunn had with\u00a0many health care professionals and people affected by\u00a0cancer (partly prompted by her desire to come to terms\u00a0with the death of her own father) and the scripts are\u00a0shaped from the real stories of five particular women. A\u00a0workbook analyzing the script has been developed to teach\u00a0healthcare profesionals and will be available on the day<\/p>\n<p><strong>A snippet from a review in the BMJ reads as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Five personal histories of pain, hopelessness, hope,\u00a0resignation, and love are the ingredients for Cancer Tales.\u00a0These five real stories take us to real problems. The\u00a0monologues and dialogues are brilliantly written, \u00a0transporting the audience into the minds and the lives of\u00a0the characters.
