She has strong opinions about the exploitation of women in the fashion industry: \u2018\u2019Photographers <em>\u2018shoot\u2019<\/em> a model in a photo-session. Models are seen as prey and men as their hunters\u2019\u2019. She believes that media equates \u2018youth with beauty\u2019: \u2018\u2019Youth is seen as\u00a0life and old age as death&#8221;. In the early 70\u2019s Benedetta was a glamorous\u00a0supermodel, the first Italian woman to feature on the cover of \u2018Vogue\u2019 magazine and a muse to Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. Following a successful\u00a0career in modelling and acting, she became an iconic figure as a feminist denouncing &#8216;women objectification&#8217; in the fashion industry. She condemned &#8216;photography&#8217; as a\u00a0vacant exercise failing to capture the essence of life in an image; \u2018\u2019the camera\u00a0lens is the enemy. What truly matters remains invisible\u2019\u2019. As an older woman, Benedetta wants to disappear from the limelight, and retreat into a life of meditation bonding with nature. She \u2018wants to die when she is still alive\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2152\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2019\/10\/A-Beautiful-Act-of-Separation.jpg\" alt=\"A Beautiful Act of Separation\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2019\/10\/A-Beautiful-Act-of-Separation.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2019\/10\/A-Beautiful-Act-of-Separation-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2019\/10\/A-Beautiful-Act-of-Separation-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-humanities\/files\/2019\/10\/A-Beautiful-Act-of-Separation-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Benedetta Barzini and Beniamino discuss her \u2018disappearance\u2019 at the London Film Festival<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beniamino Barrese is Benedetta\u2019s son;\u00a0<em>\u2018The disappearance of my mother\u2019 <\/em>is the\u00a0documentary film he made\u00a0following\u00a0his mother\u2019s decision to\u00a0live\u00a0life as she wants, a decision\u00a0she was denied all her life.\u00a0Using a hand-held camera,\u00a0Beniamino films\u00a0his mother non-stop\u00a0for months, awake, asleep, cooking and answering his probing questions about the reasons why she wants to escape her privileged existence. The mother and son\u00a0banter offers great insight into several themes; growing old and frail, the nature of\u00a0memories, but most importantly their creative plan to \u2018document her disappearance\u2019. Benedetta sees the film as \u2018an act of separation\u2019. She is\u00a0not afraid of dying, and starts planning for \u2018going from here to nowhere\u2019.\u00a0Constantly challenging her son, Benedetta is <em>not<\/em> an obedient actress in a film; she\u00a0wants to have her say about how the film ends. It is obvious that she\u00a0dislikes\u00a0being filmed, but goes along with her son\u2019s constant intrusion as an \u2018act of love and understanding\u2019.\u00a0Still her reasons for agreeing to be filmed remain as enigmatic as her character.<\/p>\n<p>Beniamino&#8217;s\u00a0motivations behind documenting his mother\u2019s bold decision to \u2018escape\u2019 originate from deeply rooted love and admiration for this elegant iconic woman; he describes her as\u00a0\u2018too beautiful, too smart, too funny, too intelligent, too aggressive, too incredible\u2019. Documenting their conversations\u00a0on film is his way of getting to know his mother better using the tools he knows best as a photographer. He is aware that there is an exploitative element in documentary film-making, hence he allows himself to be embarrassed and outwitted by his mother on screen.<\/p>\n<p>A narrative approach has been explored as a tool for understanding the lives of those close\u00a0to us.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0The film portrays the three stages of such narrative: evaluating one\u2019s past, describing a transition phase with a focus on the impact on family, and leaving a legacy of the shape of what the future holds for loved ones when the interviewed person is no longer around. In making a tender film full of poignant moments, Barrese delivers superbly in sharing special \u2018transitional\u2019 moments in the life of an exceptional woman as well as leaving the audience admiring the skill and artistry of a talented story-teller.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Glendon R Tait, Catherine Schryer, Allan McDougall, et al 2015.
