When disaster strikes, from fire to epidemics to famine, the difficulty isn&#8217;t just providing aid, it\u2019s knowing how to provide aid effectively. It does no good if water and food don\u2019t reach their targets, and poorly administered aid can also do harm. Evidence Aid uses knowledge from systematic reviews to provide reliable, up-to-date evidence on useful and practical interventions for natural disasters and other major healthcare emergencies. Evidence Aid seeks to highlight which interventions work, which don\u2019t work, which need more research, and which, no matter how well meaning, might be harmful; and to provide this information to agencies and people planning for, or responding to, disasters.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What is HEW?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>HEW2018 is an initiative led by Evidence Aid, in collaboration with the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, University of Oxford,\u00a0to promote a more evidence-based approach together with many other\u00a0organisations. During the HEW organisations provide webinars, blogs and\u00a0debates to highlight topics related to generation, use and dissemination of evidence in the humanitarian sector. Look <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evidenceaid.org\/events-and-training\/hew\/\">here<\/a> for events and webinars, and to find out how to become involved.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What to expect this week:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here at MH blog, we plan to host some of the corresponding blog posts and activities occurring during HEW. The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23medicalhumanities&amp;src=typd&amp;lang=en-gb\">#medicalhumanities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23healthhumanities&amp;src=typd&amp;lang=en-gb\">#healthhumanities<\/a> promote social justice issues, and so also global health and outreach. Humanitarian relief, in the form of medicine and basic needs, naturally aligns with our attempts to engage culturally and to reach across boundaries.
