{"id":671,"date":"2010-10-08T13:42:07","date_gmt":"2010-10-08T12:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/?p=671"},"modified":"2010-10-08T13:42:07","modified_gmt":"2010-10-08T12:42:07","slug":"the-nobel-prize-and-the-holy-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/2010\/10\/08\/the-nobel-prize-and-the-holy-see\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nobel Prize and the Holy See"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robert Edwrds was this week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-11465715\">awarded\u00a0a Nobel Prize<\/a> for his pioneering work on IVF.\u00a0 It&#8217;s true, of course, that IVF made possible a range of procedures that generate important ethical questions &#8211; Arthur Caplan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/10\/04\/AR2010100407211.html\">mentions some of them here<\/a> (although the article in which he&#8217;s quoted is a little lightweight, and gives altogether too much space to the tremulous\u00a0dark-hints-of-impending-doom crowd).<\/p>\n<p>Predictably, the Vatican has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/39505379\">issued a statement<\/a> suggesting that the prize ought to have gone to someone else; PZ Myers <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/pharyngula\/2010\/10\/of_course_they_were_quick_to_r.php\">gives it short shrift<\/a>, though:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among [the] peculiar complaints is the objection that\u00a0[IVF] &#8220;didn&#8217;t treat the underlying problem of infertility but rather skirted it&#8221;, which is rather odd. This:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Couples can&#8217;t have children<br \/>\n\u2193<br \/>\nCouples use IVF<br \/>\n\u2193<br \/>\nCouples now have children<\/p>\n<p>Looks to me like a rather direct way to treat infertility. Where they once could have no children, now they have children.<\/p>\n<p>They also don&#8217;t like the fact that the procedure produces excess embryos which are then discarded, stored, or used in further research in reproduction.
