Twenty-two women underwent the procedure, which resulted in eight children, who now range in age from six months to over two years old. This is not the first time mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) has been used to create children. In 2016, a <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.washingtonpost.com%2fnational%2fhealth%2dscience%2fthis%2dfertility%2ddoctor%2dis%2dpushing%2dthe%2dboundaries%2dof%2dhuman%2dreproduction%2dwith%2dlittle%2dregulation%2f2018%2f05%2f11%2fea9105dc%2d1831%2d11e8%2d8b08%2d027a6ccb38eb%5fstory.html&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-1ae5534add75076b06a669a0f932e1cd84d2f152\" data-linkindex=\"9\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">U.S. physician<\/a><\/u>\u00a0traveled to Mexico to create an infant using MRT; and clinics in Greece, Ukraine and Cypress advertise MRT as a \u201ctreatment\u201d for <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.newscientist.com%2farticle%2f2108549%2dexclusive%2d3%2dparent%2dbaby%2dmethod%2dalready%2dused%2dfor%2dinfertility%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-20b9a1ce77aac5cce319fc84b0cfcb722dcb345c\" data-linkindex=\"10\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">infertility<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>MRT is not a curative therapy, or simply a new type of IVF. MRT is an experimental procedure <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2fbooks%2fNBK355458%2f%23%3a%7e%3atext%3dThere%2520are%2520two%2520versions%2520of%2cnonpathogenic%2520mtDNA%2520would%2520be%2520fertilized.&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-36f5d871b05e0cb1ae834ecfb322cb4040a068c8\" data-linkindex=\"11\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">that creates an embryo<\/a><\/u>\u00a0using the DNA from three people.\u00a0Here, researchers fertilized both the mother\u2019s egg and a donor egg with the father\u2019s sperm to create zygotes. Then, they removed the nuclear DNA out of the donor zygote, and replaced it with the nuclear DNA from the mother\u2019s zygote. The aim is to transfer the nuclear DNA into a zygote with healthy mitochondria, but some of the mother\u2019s mitochondria with faulty mutations is inevitably also transferred in this procedure, resulting in a new mixture of mitochondria.<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2ftheconversation.com%2fmitochondria%2dmutation%2dmystery%2dsolved%2drandom%2dsorting%2dhelps%2dget%2drid%2dof%2dduds%2d92794&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-8126a72df5533cdbd922984ad44951766f8c3ff2\" data-linkindex=\"12\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Mitochondria<\/a><\/u>\u00a0are organelles found in almost every cell in the human body and serve a number of functions like energy production, controlling metabolic processes, and programming cell growth and death.\u00a0 Mitochondria also <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2farticles%2fPMC7755734%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-eaef3c8e4ef785b9fbacd4bf7d16b7b0734bd271\" data-linkindex=\"13\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">interact and communicate<\/a><\/u>\u00a0with our nuclear DNA, which impacts how cells function and grow throughout our lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Mitochondrial disease can be caused by mutations in nuclear DNA or mutations in mitochondrial DNA, which are passed down through our mothers. Mitochondrial disease is rare, occurring in about <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2flink.springer.com%2farticle%2f10.1007%2fs13353%2d017%2d0424%2d3&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-c6cf023c3bc43664c5725fd41c3b700b0844b62f\" data-linkindex=\"14\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">1 in 10,000 people<\/a><\/u>. Mitochondrial disease can be devastating, resulting in organ failure, seizures, or developmental delays.\u00a0 There is no cure for mitochondrial disease. However, the majority of mitochondrial disease occurs from mutations in nuclear DNA. MRT does not address mutations in nuclear DNA, but only the very rare cases when the mother\u2019s mitochondria contains faulty mutations.<\/p>\n<p>MRT <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2f37523056%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-9c622e3693e467b3ffde958641fe0a18532f2700\" data-linkindex=\"15\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">appeals<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to what many of us want from science: it promises parents the chance to have a healthy, genetically related baby. Despite optimistic headlines announcing that the children are <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.cnn.com%2f2025%2f07%2f16%2fhealth%2fbritain%2dthree%2dperson%2ddna%2dbirth&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-09f012e0d3db8ecf4604d8ade32835dd35e523bc\" data-linkindex=\"16\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">healthy<\/a><\/u>, this assessment is based on narrow and incomplete data. Parents affected by mitochondrial disease, and the public, should understand several <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2ftheconversation.com%2fbabies%2dborn%2dwith%2ddna%2dfrom%2dthree%2dpeople%2dhailed%2das%2dbreakthrough%2dbut%2dquestions%2dremain%2d261385&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-169e47befbc27ef083fb978469691d574bf85a1a\" data-linkindex=\"17\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">critical points<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite using the word \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.hfea.gov.uk%2ftreatments%2fembryo%2dtesting%2dand%2dtreatments%2dfor%2ddisease%2fmitochondrial%2ddonation%2dtreatment%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-c6dd02a3bb1cb8945aec6eb3a8dc4c93266eb120\" data-linkindex=\"18\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">treatment<\/a><\/u>\u201d and \u201ctherapy,\u201d MRT is a research experiment to manipulate embryos and create children \u2013 it is <em>not<\/em>\u00a0a clinically proven treatment. The UK was the first country to amend its law to allow MRT, and it can only be conducted as part of a clinical research trial. In this case, <a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nejm.org%2fdoi%2f10.1056%2fNEJMoa2503658&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-20956d8ec1058562883db674491695125479a2d4\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"19\">researchers<\/a>\u00a0were focused on the narrow question\u00a0whether the experiment had the intended results of producing viable embryos\u00a0and stopping transmission of faulty mitochondria to the children. In five children, the researchers reported that it worked as intended\u00a0so far. In three children, MRT reduced \u2013 but did not stop \u2013 the transmission of faulty mitochondria. Despite claims that the children are healthy, this\u00a0report only gives us a tiny glimpse into the children\u2019s health right now, because it is\u00a0based on limited medical testing.<\/p>\n<p>Levels of faulty mitochondria can differ throughout the body. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nejm.org%2fdoi%2f10.1056%2fNEJMoa2503658&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-20956d8ec1058562883db674491695125479a2d4\" data-linkindex=\"20\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Researchers<\/a><\/u>\u00a0only tested a small blood or urine sample from each child, but this does not offer any insight about mitochondria in other tissues or organs that researchers did not test. This means that the children may have high levels of faulty mitochondria in other areas of their body that went\u00a0undetected by the scope of testing.\u00a0Mitochondria are also unpredictable and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2f37041330%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-6339455c67758b64643e06948cf0278c1311633d\" data-linkindex=\"21\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">unstable<\/a><\/u>. The amount of faulty mitochondria can increase over time, which is called <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2facademic.oup.com%2fhumrep%2farticle%2f40%2fSupplement%5f1%2fdeaf097.066%2f8170978%3flogin%3dfalse%23google%5fvignette&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-989d45d4e362df18cde58be061bc2fbf3a40fc2b\" data-linkindex=\"22\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">reversion<\/a><\/u>. Even\u00a0if the children appear healthy today, their mitochondria may revert and the children could develop mitochondrial disease in the future. Observing how the children grow and develop is an ongoing experiment, but this clinical trial is only designed to monitor the pregnancies and children for <a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.newcastle%2dhospitals.nhs.uk%2fnews%2feight%2dbabies%2dborn%2dmitochondrial%2ddonation%2dtreatment%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-b24d4150ce1a3fa4859b5eb10a27b3be9ea80c84\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"23\">five years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The risks are not only that MRT did not work as intended to eliminate the faulty mitochondria in some of the children. Using MRT\u00a0introduces additional risks. Some scientists suggest MRT could induce other types of disease and health complications, partly attributed to the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/ddec1-0-en-ctp.trendmicro.com:443\/wis\/clicktime\/v1\/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2f26404813%2f&amp;umid=19e4fd2c-75fd-4ceb-b789-b4598d3e4143&amp;rct=1754052747&amp;auth=8d3ccd473d52f326e51c0f75cb32c9541898e5d5-5cb929a652b1c66a51e099e2b4d49b823c6454fe\" data-linkindex=\"24\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">mismatch<\/a><\/u>\u00a0between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA.
