This leads frequently to conflicts between obligations to\u00a0current patients, and others who might benefit from treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Is\u00a0it ethical for doctors and other health professionals to engage in bedside\u00a0rationing? What ethical principles should guide decisions (for example about\u00a0which\u00a0patients to offer intensive care admission or surgery)? Is it\u00a0discriminatory to take into account disability in allocating resources? If\u00a0patients are responsible for their\u00a0illness, should that lead to a lower\u00a0priority for treatment?<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0this seminar philosophers from the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics\u00a0will explore and shed light on the profound ethical challenges around\u00a0allocating\u00a0limited health care resources.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers include Prof Dominic Wilkinson, Professor Julian Savulescu, Dr Rebecca Brown. Guest lecture by Professor Thaddeus Pope (Professor of Law, Mitchell Hamline School of Law, Minnesota) \u2013 on the US approach to allocating organs<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Topics \u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allocating\u00a0intensive care beds and balancing ethical values<\/li>\n<li>Moralising\u00a0medicine \u2013 is it ethical to allocate treatment based on responsibility for\u00a0illness?<\/li>\n<li>Cost-equivalence \u2013 rethinking treatment allocation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This seminar is aimed at health professionals\/ethicists<\/p>\n<p>There are strictly limited places.
