{"id":2925,"date":"2015-07-06T12:07:59","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T11:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/?p=2925"},"modified":"2015-07-06T12:07:59","modified_gmt":"2015-07-06T11:07:59","slug":"eating-disorders-and-ramadan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/2015\/07\/06\/eating-disorders-and-ramadan\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating Disorders and Ramadan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of those things that&#8217;d simply never occurred to me before was highlighted a few days ago in <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/husseinkesvani\/this-is-what-its-like-to-recover-from-an-eating-disorder-dur#.vlMPlBLpN\" target=\"_blank\">a story on Buzzfeed<\/a><\/span>: how do you reconcile Ramadan fasting with recovery from an eating disorder? \u00a0Indeed: can you reconcile them at all?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"sub_buzz_desc\">\u201cFood is obviously a big part of the holy month,\u201d Sofia says. \u201cUsually after breaking fasts, my family have bigger meals than usual, my mum cooks a lot of extravagant Pakistani dishes for iftar. It\u2019s also a time when my extended family tend to visit more, or we go to the mosque and eat there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really difficult to eat in public, especially because I\u2019m still uncomfortable around a lot of foods. And what people usually don\u2019t understand is how seeing all that food can make you feel so pressured. Last Ramadan I remember having to force myself to eat because everyone kept telling me to \u2013 and I couldn\u2019t say no to them. When we came back from the mosque, I spent most of the night crying, because I felt I had no control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>She adds: \u201cI know in my head that I need to stick to the diet and do what my doctor says.
