{"id":2885,"date":"2015-03-01T13:04:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T12:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/?p=2885"},"modified":"2015-03-01T13:04:05","modified_gmt":"2015-03-01T12:04:05","slug":"bye-bye-saatchi-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/medical-ethics\/2015\/03\/01\/bye-bye-saatchi-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Bye-Bye Saatchi Bill?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It would appear that Lord Saatchi&#8217;s Medical Innovation Bill\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2015\/mar\/01\/lib-dems-veto-saatchis-medical-innovation-bill\">is toast<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Lib Dems, who are reportedly the ones to have vetoed it, are nevertheless being mealy-mouthed about something they should be proclaiming from the rooftops: the Bill is\/ was needless at best, and possibly dangerous. \u00a0But, hey: there&#8217;s an election coming up, and cancer treatment is politically important; meanwhile, the party isn&#8217;t\u00a0popular, and could probably have expected a set of &#8220;Lib Dems veto miracle cure&#8221; headlines had they made that move.<\/p>\n<p>Which, when you read the\u00a0<em>Graun<\/em>&#8216;s article, isn&#8217;t a million miles away from Saatchi&#8217;s response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy killing the bill they have killed the hopes of thousands of cancer patients. It is as simple as that. Nick Clegg has handed down a death sentence to cancer patients.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which is, of course, untrue. \u00a0But, hey: whatever else he may be, Saatchi&#8217;s a great ad-man, and there&#8217;s an election coming up&#8230;<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It would appear that Lord Saatchi&#8217;s Medical Innovation Bill\u00a0is toast.
