{"id":992,"date":"2013-03-21T21:49:06","date_gmt":"2013-03-21T20:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/?p=992"},"modified":"2013-03-21T21:49:06","modified_gmt":"2013-03-21T20:49:06","slug":"call-for-eu-accident-and-injury-data-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2013\/03\/21\/call-for-eu-accident-and-injury-data-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for EU accident and injury data system"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Morag Mackay, now at Eurosafe, sent me this interesting notice: &#8220;<b>On the occasion of the 15th European Consumer Day, \u00a0a coalition of twenty-eight European umbrella organisations are issuing a\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosafe.eu.com\/csi\/eurosafe2006.nsf\/wwwAssets\/32F1469164C820FAC12576CC0051A0D4\/$file\/Joint%20call%20kopie.pdf\"><b>Joint Call<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0appealing to the European Institutions and the Member States to create an EU-funded accident &amp; injury data system under the co-ordination of the European Commission.<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Earlier this week EuroSafe reported that 41 million injuries per year are treated in Emergency Departments across the EU (see report\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosafe.eu.com\/csi\/eurosafe2006.nsf\/wwwAssets\/7A0E220588591323C1257857003DBDA9\/$file\/IDB%202013%20report.pdf\"><b>&#8216;Injuries in the European Union&#8217;<\/b><\/a>). \u00a0Aiming to reduce the number of preventable injuries and also healthcare costs, a broad coalition of European business groups, consumer organisations, standardisation bodies and safety promoters urge the European Commission to found and fund an EU-wide accident and injury data system in a representative sample of emergency centres.\u00a0They are convinced that such a system would contribute to safer products for consumers, better standards and regulations, and fewer accidents and injuries. Moreover, the cost of creating such a system would be more than offset by reductions in health care costs.&#8221; \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Editors comment<\/span>: Much as I welcome growth in interest by the EU in injury prevention, I am not convinced the main emphasis should rest on the creation of a data system, no matter how sophisticated it may be.
