It is either a really cool bibliographic and linguistic research tool or an incredible time sink \u2026 or maybe both.<\/p>\n<p>Google has digitized millions of books in English, mostly, but also in several other major languages. Single words and \u201cn\u201d word combinations are catalogued and described in probabilistic terms, each tracked as a percent of all recorded n-combinations in print in a given year. These values are then normalized against the total printed corpus in a year, and can thus be tracked and compared over time.<\/p>\n<p>Here, for example, are the prevalence from 1900 to 2000 of \u201ctuberculosis\u201d (blue) \u201cpoliomyelitis\u201d (red) and \u201cAIDS\u201d (green). The patterns are as you might expect. There are curious peaks in published references to TB corresponding to the first and second world wars. Polio has a modest rise in the 1960s and AIDS bursts onto the scene only after 1980.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-89\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2010\/12\/21\/injury-v-accident-google-n-gram-viewer\/tb\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-89\" title=\"Word probabilities\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/tb-300x193.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/tb-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/tb.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I then tracked \u201cinjury prevention\u201d in blue and \u201caccident prevention\u201d in red, also from 1900 to 2000.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-90\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2010\/12\/21\/injury-v-accident-google-n-gram-viewer\/e\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-90\" title=\"Injury v Accident (all English)\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/e-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/e-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/e.png 1026w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For most of the last century our work would clearly have been \u201caccident prevention.\u201d The use of <em>injury prevention<\/em> shows a rising trend in the late 1980s and 1990s, finally overtaking <em>accident prevention<\/em> in 1994 \u2013 just before our journal put out its first issue.<\/p>\n<p>For all the effort our colleagues put into abolishing the term \u201caccident\u201d (I don\u2019t even know if I am allowed to use that word on a BMJ blog \u2026.) one would hope that \u201cinjury prevention\u201d would be the dominant term by now. Interestingly, while this seems to be the case for English as a whole, there is a discrepancy when comparing publications in <strong>American English<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-91\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2010\/12\/21\/injury-v-accident-google-n-gram-viewer\/ae\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-91\" title=\"Injury v Accident (American English)\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/ae-300x160.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/ae-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/ae.png 1027w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To those in <strong>British English<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-92\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2010\/12\/21\/injury-v-accident-google-n-gram-viewer\/be\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-92\" title=\"Injury v Accident (British English)\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/be-300x160.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/be-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/files\/2010\/12\/be.png 1026w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly, most Britons (or, rather, published authors writing in British English) will still use \u2013 and presumably understand \u2013 the term <em>accident prevention<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This begs the question, of course, why spend time teaching the world to speak our language? If people want to describe injury control as accident prevention, maybe that\u2019s how we should describe it too.
