Early\u00a0indications\u00a0suggest that\u00a0recommendations\u00a0will include universal background checks for gun buyers, closing\u00a0the\u00a0&#8220;gun show loophole,&#8221; \u00a0and\u00a0prohibitions\u00a0on large capacity magazines.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the press is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/biden-cites-broad-agreement-on-universal-background-checks-for-gun-sales\/2013\/01\/10\/2369cc6c-5b4b-11e2-9fa9-5fbdc9530eb9_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">reporting <\/a>that Biden would like to remedy the <em>de facto<\/em> prohibition of federally funded research on firearm injury. He has discussed\u00a0\u00a0\u201cthe whole question of the ability of any federal agency to do any research on the issue of gun violence\u201d and\u00a0noted a need to &#8220;gather information on \u2018what kind of weapons are used most to kill people\u2019 and \u2018what kind of weapons are trafficked weapons.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0suppression\u00a0of US public health research into firearm injury and death was recently summarized in a JAMA commentary <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=1487470\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Opening federal funding for gun violence research might, finally, allow the US to explore programs and policies to reduce the toll of\u00a0unintentional\u00a0injury, suicide and homicide by firearms in this country. The public health\u00a0approach\u00a0can be more nuanced (and\u00a0politically\u00a0palatable) than outright bans, much in the manner that motor vehicle trauma has been reduced through an incremental program of safety improvements, evidence-based public policy and the\u00a0evolution\u00a0of social norms around dangerous behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Biden has begun to offer an outline of what he will recommend to the US president as a policy response to gun violence.
