{"id":679,"date":"2013-01-08T18:38:20","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T17:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/?p=679"},"modified":"2013-01-08T18:38:20","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T17:38:20","slug":"more-on-gun-control-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/injury-prevention\/2013\/01\/08\/more-on-gun-control-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"More on gun control in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two stories in the Washington Post caught my attention.\u00a0 The first describes Gun Homicides and Gun Ownership by Country and reveals, not surprisingly, that \u201cThe United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world and the highest per capita rate of firearm-related murders of all developed countries.\u201d When ranked by rate of ownership, Yemen is second and Switzerland third. The US falls to 18<sup>th<\/sup> place when ranked by % of homicides that involved guns. In the comments that followed, the point was often made that the underlying issue is mental health.\u00a0 However, as one contributor noted, \u201cCorrect it is a mental health issue however the opportunity for people with mental health issues to gain possession of an automatic assault rifle in the USA is in itself an insanity actively promoted and encouraged by the NRA\u201d. Whatever your views, the chart is worth checking out. Essentially the point is made that his response is likely to be \u2018far broader and more comprehensive\u2019 than simply resurrecting the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition. Also under consideration are universal background checks for would-be gun purchasers.
