Real video examples of this risk can be seen\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gbemfkbaD7I\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.crikey.com.au\/theurbanist\/2014\/03\/19\/what-can-be-done-to-stop-cyclists-getting-doored\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Multiple factors contribute for the occurrence of &#8220;dooring&#8221; events, including those related to the behavior of road users, the infrastructure, traffic regulations, policies, and even recommendations based on bicycling safety research. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">It has been suggested that the lack of\u00a0awareness among car users\u00a0can be in part explained by the limited\u00a0efforts of\u00a0city administrators to change the attitudes and social norms via\u00a0increased penalties for &#8220;dooring&#8221; bikers and stronger campaigns promoting looking for bikers\u00a0on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In\u00a0<em>Injury Prevention<\/em> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/injuryprevention.bmj.com\/content\/20\/2\/143.full?sid=e2a54d54-32c5-4493-9ec3-8152d33305dd\" target=\"_blank\">Global News Highlights<\/a><\/span> from 2014, Barry Pless wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"p-11\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;A column in the New York Times, \u201cIs it OK to kill cyclists?\u201d, was prompted by the observation that \u201cmotorists in America generally receive no punishment for crashing into or killing cyclists, even when the \u2018accident\u2019 is transparently their fault.\u201d In the Netherlands, the opposite is true: \u201cif a motor vehicle hits a cyclist, \u2026 it is always assumed to have been the driver\u2019s fault\u2026 \u201d because \u201cthe law treats pedestrians and cyclists as weaker participants in traffic\u2026\u201d The result is far fewer injuries to cyclists: 12 per billion km cycled in the Netherlands versus 58\u2013109 in the USA.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-12\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Editor&#8217;s comment: Bicyclists need better protection. I am tired of complaints about how some cyclists behave. Their foolish behaviour mostly leads to harming themselves. In contrast, the far more dangerous car and truck drivers tend to be tolerated. Until there is equal condemnation for driver infractions, I suggest we cut bicyclists some slack. <strong>An example: recently, coroners reports were issued following three bicyclist deaths in Montreal. In the last year, 92 bicyclists were doored; 58 were taken to hospital and 2 died. The fine for <span class=\"search-term-highlight\">dooring<\/span> is US$30!<\/strong> Alongside a public awareness campaign reminding drivers that <span class=\"search-term-highlight\">dooring<\/span> is illegal, one coroner recommended charges of criminal negligence and a substantial increase in fines. \u201cMotorists (must) accept that cyclists \u2026 are not obligated to restrict themselves to bike lanes.\u201d It is time now for the balance in North America to swing in the direction of the Netherlands.&#8221; [emphasis ours]\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Another contributing factor to &#8220;dooring&#8221; is\u00a0unsafe infrastructure.\u00a0For example,\u00a0even if bike lanes might be\u00a0associated with overall risk reduction on average, they become a problem\u00a0when built near to car parking spots, as\u00a0open car doors usually\u00a0block most of bike lane areas giving bikers\u00a0no\u00a0options to avoid crashes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A\u00a02014 commentary in <em>Injury Prevention<\/em>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/injuryprevention.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2014\/08\/14\/injuryprev-2013-041130.full\" target=\"_blank\">Unsuitability of the epidemiological approach to bicycle transportation injuries and traffic engineering problems<\/a><\/span>, argued that problems such as the &#8216;door zone&#8217; are also unwittingly created through the application of unsuitable methodologies in an attempt to solve complex problems:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;bicycle lanes have through systematic review received epidemiological approval.\u00a0In cities around the world, these lanes, whether curbside of parked <span class=\"search-term-highlight\">car<\/span>s (therefore being cycle tracks) or roadside (ordinary bicycle lanes), typically run in the <span class=\"search-term-highlight\">door<\/span> zones.\u00a0They are thus an obvious hazard. What is the common remedy offered, by epidemiologists\u00a0and governments? Hypervigilance and luck, to be provoked by reducing turnover or putting the conflict on the passenger and curb side,\u00a0large fines, stickers reminding drivers to watch out, advice to open the <span class=\"search-term-highlight\">door<\/span> with the opposite hand or for riders to look through vehicle windows for occupants\u2019 heads, or even for occupants to open vehicle\u00a0<span class=\"search-term-highlight\">door<\/span>s inch by inch&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is true that bicycling safety is a complex problem. Indeed, complexity, by nature, increases the unpredictability of effects. \u00a0Likely, solutions to the &#8220;dooring&#8221; problem and others alike, would require embracing this complexity in scientific research and policy development, and also the work of of\u00a0multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, road users, epidemiologists, sociologists, etc., that can study and rethink bicycling safety from different angles.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Two examples of strategies that are working to address this complexity are <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/visionzeronetwork.org\" target=\"_blank\">Vision Zero<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fatalityfreefriday.com\/about\/our-aims\/#.VewoTWCzLwy\" target=\"_blank\">Fatality Free Friday<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">. Both bring together a diverse range of stakeholders &#8211; such as\u00a0local traffic planners and engineers, police officers, policymakers, and public health professionals &#8211; to work towards safer mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In the words of Leah Shahum, director of Vision Zero: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;<em>traditionally, traffic planners and engineers, police officers, policymakers, and public health professionals have not collaborated in meaningful, cross-disciplinary ways to meet shared goals (partly because they literally did not have shared goals for safe streets). \u00a0Vision Zero acknowledges that there are many factors that contribute to safe mobility\u00a0infrastructure, enforcement, individual behavior\/education, and policies \u2014 and all must be coordinated with a safety-first approach.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Injury prevention, at its core, remains a complex endeavour and one in which the strengths of multidisciplinary teams and different fields of research must be harnessed for full effectiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>~ Julian Santaella and Sheree Bekker<\/p>\n<p id=\"article-title-1\">\n<p><!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bicycling related injuries are a\u00a0complex problem.\u00a0Take for example injuries related to\u00a0&#8220;dooring&#8221; &#8211; in which a car driver or passenger opens a car door into the path of a cyclist, causing the cyclist to hit the door or veer into the path of oncoming traffic &#8211; which are becoming all-the-more common in our cities.
