Recently Retraction Watch posted an item from Science that greatly strengthens my concerns. The posting describes a paper sent to over 300 OA journals that was accepted by over one half. The only problem was that the paper was a spoof and carefully designed to make the problems both scientific and literary entirely evident. Here is part of what the report says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"box\">\n<div id=\"box_inner\">\n<div id=\"text\">\n<div id=\"pages\">\n<div id=\"page1\">\n<div id=\"articleHeader\">\n<h1><b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_0\">S<\/b>cience reporter spoofs hundreds of open access journals with fake\u00a0papers<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_1\">\u00a0<\/b><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/science.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"science\" src=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/science.jpg?w=700\" \/>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&#8230; \u00a0today, we bring you news of an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scim.ag\/OA-Sting\" target=\"_blank\">effort by John Bohannon\u00a0<\/a>, of\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>magazine, to publish fake papers in more than 300 open access journals<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_5\">.<\/b>Bohannon, writing as \u201cOcorrafoo Cobange\u201d of the \u201cWassee Institute of Medicine\u201d \u2014 neither of which exist, of course \u2014 explains his process:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The goal was to create a credible but mundane scientific paper, one with such grave errors that a competent peer reviewer should easily identify it as flawed and unpublishable<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_6\">.<\/b>\u00a0Submitting identical papers to hundreds of journals would be asking for trouble<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_7\">.<\/b>\u00a0But the papers had to be similar enough that the outcomes between journals could be comparable<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_8\">.<\/b>\u00a0So I created a scientific version of Mad Libs<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_9\">.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The paper took this form: Molecule X from lichen species Y inhibits the growth of cancer cell Z. To substitute for those variables, I created a database of molecules, lichens, and cancer cell lines and wrote a computer program to generate hundreds of unique papers<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_10\">.<\/b>\u00a0Other than those differences, the scientific content of each paper is identical<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_11\">.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bohannon then combed the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doaj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Directory of Open Access Journals\u00a0<\/a>(DOAJ) and<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarlyoa.com\/publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Beall\u2019s list of possible predatory publishers\u00a0<\/a>, using various filters:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The final list of targets came to 304 open-access publishers: 167 from the DOAJ, 121 from Beall\u0092s list, and 16 that were listed by both<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_12\">.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The results<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_13\">?<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>By the time Science went to press, 157 of the journals had accepted the paper and 98 had rejected it<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_14\">.<\/b>\u00a0Of the remaining 49 journals, 29 seem to be derelict: websites abandoned by their creators<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_15\">.<\/b>\u00a0Editors from the other 20 had e-mailed the fictitious corresponding authors stating that the paper was still under review\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/03\/science-reporter-spoofs-hundreds-of-journals-with-a-fake-paper\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/342\/6154\/60.full\" target=\"_blank\">Bohannon\u2019s analysis\u00a0<\/a>, which goes into far more depth, demonstrates an appalling lack of peer review and quality control at the journals he spoofed<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_16\">.<\/b>\u00a0&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Still, we will not be surprised if some traditional publishing advocates use<a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/03\/science-reporter-spoofs-hundreds-of-journals-with-a-fake-paper\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/342\/6154\/60.full\" target=\"_blank\">Bohannon\u2019s sting\u00a0<\/a>as ammunition to fight wider adoption of open access<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_24\">.<\/b>\u00a0That gunpowder may be a bit wet, by the way<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_25\">.<\/b>\u00a0Bohannon writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Journals published by Elsevier, Wolters Kluwer, and Sage all accepted my bogus paper<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_26\">.<\/b><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Retraction Watch readers may recall that it was\u00a0<em>Applied Mathematics Letters<\/em>\u2014 a non-open-access journal published by Elsevier \u2014 that published a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.wordpress.com\/category\/by-journal\/applied-mathematics-letters-retractions\/\" target=\"_blank\">string of bizarre papers\u00a0<\/a>, including one that was retracted because it made \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/05\/math-paper-retracted-because-some-of-it-makes-no-sense-mathematically\/\" target=\"_blank\">no sense mathematically\u00a0<\/a>\u201d and another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/17\/math-paper-retracted-because-it-contains-no-scientific-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">whose corresponding author\u2019s email address was \u201cohm@budweiser.com<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_27\">.<\/b>\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Retractions, as readers may guess \u2014 and perhaps hope \u2014 will be forthcoming now that Bohannon\u2019s sting has been revealed<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_28\">.<\/b>\u00a0Here\u2019s part of a message the<a href=\"http:\/\/oaspa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association\u00a0<\/a>sent its members earlier this week:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the event that your publishing organization has accepted and published the article, we expect you to follow recognized retraction procedures<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_29\">.<\/b>\u00a0if you require any assistance or guidance on retracting the article, the OASPA board will be happy to assist with this<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_30\">.<\/b>\u00a0In addition, should it be the case that OASPA members have published the paper, we will prepare a retraction notice\/explanation that your organization may choose to use<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_31\">.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ll see if this changes the mind of the editor of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Biochemical and Pharmacological Research<\/em>, who shrugged when \u201cCobange\u201d told him the paper was fatally flawed and should be retracted<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_32\">.<\/b>\u00a0A correction would do, he said<b id=\"speechFragmentSeparator__1_33\">.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Editors note: This is funny but scary.
