{"id":565,"date":"2011-02-28T23:00:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T22:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart-journalscan\/?p=565"},"modified":"2015-11-12T15:32:11","modified_gmt":"2015-11-12T14:32:11","slug":"remote-haemodynamic-monitoring-of-heart-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart\/2011\/02\/28\/remote-haemodynamic-monitoring-of-heart-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Remote haemodynamic monitoring of heart failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite improvements in therapy, hospitalisations for heart failure have risen over the past three decades. \u00a0More recently, implantable systems for monitoring of intracardiac and pulmonary artery pressures have been developed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the CHAMPION (CardioMEMS Heart Sensor Allows Monitoring of Pressure to Improve Outcomes in NYHA Class III Heart Failure Patients) trial, patients were implanted with a wireless haemodynamic monitoring system, or were assigned to a control group, for at least six months. \u00a0The primary endpoint was the rate of heart-failure-related hospitalisations at six months, however two safety endpoints were also designated: freedom from device-related complications and freedom from pressure-sensor failures.<\/p>\n<p>The treatment group consisted of 270 patients and in 6 months 83 heart-failure-related hospitalisations were noted, compared to 120 in the control group consisting of 280 patients (p&lt;0.0001). \u00a0This later translated into a 39% reduction in heart-failure-related hospitalisations in the treatment group when compared to the control group over a mean of 15 months follow-up in the study (p&lt;0.0001, figure). \u00a0There were no pressure-sensor failures, but eight patients had device- or system-related compliactions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This study demonstrates a reduction in hospitalisations in patients with NYHA III heart failure who were fitted with a wireless implantable haemodynamic monitoring system, suggesting that these devices can provide additional information that can be used to improve heart failure management.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abraham WT, Adamson PB, Bourge RC et al. \u00a0Wireless pulmonary artery haemodynamic monitoring in\u00a0chronic heart failure: a randomised controlled trial. \u00a0Lancet 2011; 377:658-66.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart-journalscan\/2011\/02\/28\/remote-haemodynamic-monitoring-of-heart-failure\/screen-shot-2011-03-01-at-06-42-40-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-573\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-573\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-03-01 at 06.42.40\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart-journalscan\/files\/2011\/02\/Screen-shot-2011-03-01-at-06.42.402-300x258.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart\/files\/2011\/02\/Screen-shot-2011-03-01-at-06.42.402-300x258.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart\/files\/2011\/02\/Screen-shot-2011-03-01-at-06.42.402.png 461w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><!--TrendMD v2.4.8--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite improvements in therapy, hospitalisations for heart failure have risen over the past three decades. \u00a0More recently, implantable systems for monitoring of intracardiac and pulmonary artery pressures have been developed.
