{"id":534,"date":"2011-02-08T23:40:24","date_gmt":"2011-02-08T22:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart-journalscan\/?p=534"},"modified":"2015-11-12T15:32:41","modified_gmt":"2015-11-12T14:32:41","slug":"new-genetic-loci-for-mi-and-atherosclerosis-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart\/2011\/02\/08\/new-genetic-loci-for-mi-and-atherosclerosis-found\/","title":{"rendered":"New genetic loci for MI and atherosclerosis found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several novel loci associated with coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, however these represent only a small proportion of the inherited component of these disorders. \u00a0Furthermore, it is not clear whether these loci contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, or whether they may influence the stability of atherosclerotic plaque. \u00a0Therefore, this study was designed to investigate whether genetic factors predisposing to MI in patients with coronary atherosclerosis are distinct from those that associate with the presence of coronary atherosclerosis.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The authors used coronary angiography to assess CAD phenotypes, and performed genome-wide association studies on those with coronary artery disease (n=12,393) and those without (n=7383).
