{"id":10,"date":"2008-10-14T00:52:18","date_gmt":"2008-10-13T23:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart-journalscan\/?p=10"},"modified":"2015-11-12T13:12:29","modified_gmt":"2015-11-12T12:12:29","slug":"alda-1-can-protect-against-ischaemic-damage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/heart\/2008\/10\/14\/alda-1-can-protect-against-ischaemic-damage\/","title":{"rendered":"Alda-1 can protect against ischaemic damage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The discovery of the protective effects of myocardial preconditioning has stimulated much research into the molecular mechanism of this phenomenon. \u00a0 A number of cardiac proteins have been found whose levels or state of phosphorylation change with cardioprotection, but do any of these play a critical role?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Chen et al. used unbiased proteomic analysis to identify an enzyme that consistently correlated with cardioprotection in\u00a0 a rat model, mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2).\u00a0 Further research identified a small molecule, Alda-1, which enhanced levels of ALDH2 and led to a 60% reduction in infarct size when it was injected into rats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Several animal studies have found important cardioprotective proteins before and it remains to be seen whether ALDH2 and Alda-1 will be of any use in limitng myocardial ischaemia.\u00a0 On the other hand, the mechanisms described here provide attractive targets for future pharmaceutical agents on several fronts &#8211; ALDH2 is also important in the metabolism of alcohol.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Chen C-H, Budas GR, Churchill EN et al.
