{"id":626,"date":"2015-01-26T02:35:19","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T02:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/?p=626"},"modified":"2015-01-26T02:35:19","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T02:35:19","slug":"losing-the-fight-against-obesity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/2015\/01\/26\/losing-the-fight-against-obesity\/","title":{"rendered":"Losing the Fight Against Obesity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roberta Heale \u00a0@robertaheale<\/p>\n<p>Look to any blog, news or health website and you\u2019ll find a story about the world obesity epidemic almost every day from every angle: Financial\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1BVEdNF\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1BVEdNF<\/a> obesity programs <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1gd0Yi3\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1gd0Yi3<\/a> health <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1zLs3Y6\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1zLs3Y6<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/huff.to\/1zLtcyW\">http:\/\/huff.to\/1zLtcyW<\/a> &amp; from the fashion and beauty industry etc. etc. etc.\u00a0 Despite the news, the world is getting fatter and fatter and fatter.\u00a0 The World Health Organization indicates<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 \u00a0worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 \u00a0In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 \u00a0 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2014, and 13% were obese.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 \u00a0 Most of the world&#8217;s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 \u00a0 42 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>From: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs311\/en\/\">http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs311\/en\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, obesity is preventable.\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 What other epidemic has affected so many people?<\/p>\n<p>As with all epidemics, nurses are on the front line in the fight against obesity.\u00a0 Health care education and programs are important steps.\u00a0 However we aren\u2019t winning this war. Albert Einstein, is credited with saying \u201cThe definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.\u201d\u00a0 Given this, maybe we need to change our approach.<\/p>\n<p>I just watched the movie The Imitation Game. It portrays the important work of another genius, Alan Turing, who refused to waste his time on the traditional code breaking techniques that were not making any headway in breaking the German code system used in WWll.\u00a0 Instead he designed the first computer, which cracked the codes that were previously unsolvable.\u00a0 Maybe we need to change our approach and think in an innovative and strategic manner with the \u2018big picture\u2019 in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Advocacy and leadership are among the list of nursing competencies and nurses have been involved in many campaigns for health public policy.\u00a0 There has been success in reducing smoking rates through strategic policies in some jurisdictions.
