{"id":347,"date":"2013-06-05T16:56:30","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T16:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/?p=347"},"modified":"2013-06-05T16:56:30","modified_gmt":"2013-06-05T16:56:30","slug":"nurses-intention-to-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/2013\/06\/05\/nurses-intention-to-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurse&#8217;s Intention to Leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nurses working in hospitals across the globe are experiencing unprecedented levels of responsibility, stress and burnout with increasing care demands and lowered staffing levels.\u00a0 Organizations and governments typically turn a deaf ear to issues raised by nurses and nursing groups.\u00a0 Nurses are often accused of lack of caring and compassion along with diminished quality of care. \u00a0They are frustrated that the resources aren\u2019t available to provide the best care possible to patients.\u00a0 The result is that many, many nurses leave hospital work, or nursing itself.<\/p>\n<p>I can speak from personal experience.\u00a0 I spent over a decade of my career in acute care hospital settings.\u00a0 The environment became so difficult for me that I finally made a list of pros and cons about staying in nursing.\u00a0 I told my family and friends that I had to find a role in nursing that I could tolerate, or I had to leave it completely.\u00a0 Thankfully I found a nurse practitioner program which took me to a job in the community setting.\u00a0 I love being an NP. Nonetheless, I felt some regret, guilt and sadness about leaving the hospital setting.\u00a0 I just didn\u2019t see another way for me to stay in nursing.<\/p>\n<p>There are numerous studies about nurses \u2018intention to leave\u2019.\u00a0 I\u2019ve copied several links below to abstracts and full articles about studies in several different countries.\u00a0 A number of reasons are given for nurses\u2019 intention to leave their workplace.\u00a0 Common variables influencing nurse\u2019s decision to leave across all studies are lack of organizational support and management leadership. Some straightforward things, such as limits on patient assignments, or fewer day to night changeovers can make a huge difference for nurses.
