[1]<\/li>\n<li>Making evidence accessible, understandable and useful for knowledge users. [2]<\/li>\n<li>The reciprocal and complementary flow and uptake of research knowledge between researchers, knowledge brokers and knowledge users \u2026. in such a way that may benefit users and create positive impacts. [3]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left\"><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Why should we mobilise knowledge?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Research findings still take on average 17 years to change practice<\/li>\n<li>Research is expensive (MRC spend 2017-8 ~ \u00a3814m and NIHR 2020-21 ~ \u00a3480m) and is often wasted<\/li>\n<li>We have a professional and social responsibility to ensure that research findings are moved to where they are most useful and improve patient care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many tools and frameworks for KMb. <strong><em>Key considerations<\/em><\/strong> for planning KMb adapted from the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health offer a useful starting point<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2413\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1191\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Blog-diagram-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1191px) 100vw, 1191px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A practical example from the world of dermatology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Things we know <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eczema affects around 20% of children in the UK and impacts on wellbeing and quality of life<\/li>\n<li>Evidence based guidance on eczema care is freely available <a href=\"https:\/\/cks.nice.org.uk\/topics\/eczema-atopic\/\">Eczema &#8211; atopic | Health topics A to Z | CKS | NICE<\/a><\/li>\n<li>An eczema mantra is \u201cget control-keep control\u201d through use of topical corticosteroids when needed and regular and consistent application of emollients<\/li>\n<li>But \u2026\u2026 this often doesn\u2019t happen in practice for multiple reasons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Five co-created messages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Parents, practitioners and researchers co-created five simple, evidence-based messages designed to be delivered to parents, practitioners and the wider community with the aim of increasing shared language and understanding and so improve care.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Eczema is more than just dry skin<\/li>\n<li>Eczema doesn\u2019t just go away<\/li>\n<li>Moisturisers are for every day<\/li>\n<li>Steroid creams are okay when you need them<\/li>\n<li>You know your child\u2019s eczema best.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>One focus was on getting the messages to children, to plan this we worked through the knowledge mobilisation framework.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applying the knowledge mobilisation framework to eczema care <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What knowledge: <\/strong>Eczema needs to be looked after every day and there are special creams for when it is most sore.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goals: <\/strong>For children and parents to understand and practice best eczema care.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key messages: <\/strong>You need to use moisturisers <u>every<\/u> day, steroid creams are okay when your skin is getting worse. You need to look after your skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why mobilise: <\/strong>Help children and parents care for eczema more effectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>Educate and motivate change in eczema care practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Who?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sharing knowledge: <\/strong>Knowledge mobiliser, writer and illustrator.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Partners and champions: <\/strong>Parents and teachers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recipients: <\/strong>Children, parents and teachers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How: <\/strong>In a story book and teacher resource pack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>When: <\/strong>From now.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other linked activities: <\/strong>National Eczema week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Measure<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Goal achievement: <\/strong>Children enjoy the book and understand more about how to care for their skin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indicators: <\/strong>Qualitative feedback, quantitative eczema severity measures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluation questions: <\/strong>What did you learn from the book? How are you getting on with eczema care? Is your skin more comfortable?\u00a0 Is your eczema less severe? Are you having fewer flares? (answered by children or parents). Was the teacher resource useful? What impact did the resource have?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How did we share messages with children? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We created this book, if you follow the link you can see how we have embedded the five key messages into content that is meaningful for children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcu.ac.uk\/health-sciences\/research\/centre-for-social-care-health-and-related-research\/research-projects\/eczema-mindlines\/the-dragon-in-my-skin\">The Dragon In My Skin. <\/a>\u00a0\u00a0We also developed a teacher resource pack based on the Dragon story <a href=\"https:\/\/bcuassets.blob.core.windows.net\/docs\/tdims-workpack-v2-long-132693393982395364.pdf\">Dragon resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Picture3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2408 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Picture3-300x287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Picture3-300x287.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/ebn\/files\/2022\/09\/Picture3.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Early evaluation examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hard copies distributed to primary schools (n=792) with links to all other Dragon resources. Over 200 further copies sent on request to teachers, parents and practitioners.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<em>superb, I love the story and the pictures, what a lovely way for children with eczema to be able to see how they can tame their dragon and to have its impact validated in such a wonderful way!\u201d <\/em>[parent]<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cIt&#8217;s beautiful.
