For example, in <a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2014-204635?ijkey=DsYerTPQKldwE&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>HIV in India: the Jogini culture<\/em><\/a>\u00a0, we read that female gender ensured a lifestyle that exposed the patient to HIV.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe patient never attended school. At menstruation, she awoke to a startling reality as she had her first sexual encounter in her parent&#8217;s home.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2015-211387?ijkey=ur9gnkmv0CN1E&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another case<\/a> from India reports that more women and girls are illiterate compared to men (41.2% and 21.4% respectively).<sup>2<\/sup> Karande states that \u201c<em>maternal illiteracy directly affect[s] health-seeking behaviours<\/em>,\u201d and in this case, maternal illiteracy as well as maternal undernutrition results in infantile iatrogenic Cushing syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2016-217572?ijkey=ZXaebhV7yiQYE&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In this case<\/a> from the USA, a patient without prenatal care has devastating consequences by attempting to deliver at home. <sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, being a female is uncertain in and of itself as in intersex individuals or rare conditions such as female hypospadias, which may be recognised <a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2015-214172?ijkey=e1ooEXqRspibE&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early in the patient\u2019s life<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2016-215064?ijkey=ZSSdqZ17A9O9Y&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">much later<\/a>.<sup>4,5<\/sup> Some females have had <a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2014-204894?ijkey=JlGugzYIfnZWk&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender reassignment surgery<\/a>, and were previously males. The surgical intervention to become a female may lead to complications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Vaginal reconstruction does come with a myriad of complications including rectovaginal fistula, urethral fistula, vaginal stenosis,\u00a0with loss of either depth or width, urethral stenosis, hair growth in the vaginal canal if scrotal skin is used for construction<\/em>\u201d<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s health is often equated to maternal health or gynaecological health but women\u2019s global health includes cases such as the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2016-214615?ijkey=trVibAyf4vETQ&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental health in a Dominican, HIV+ woman<\/a> who was scared of being considered \u201cloca\u201d and promiscuous. The authors write:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cAlthough the patient voiced suicidal intent, she was reluctant to see the psychologist for fear of being labelled as a \u2018loca\u2019 (crazy person). Locas are rejected in Dominican society for being perceived as being out-of-control, unpredictable and unable to fulfil expected gender roles\u2026HIV-positive women are often negatively perceived as sexually promiscuous, which can be considered an insult to their partners&#8217; \u2018machismo\u2019 (sense of manliness), and women who disclose their serostatus are at a greater risk of abandonment and abuse by their partners.\u201d <\/em><em><sup>7<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/bcr-2015-213845?ijkey=e4aoNO8UY1VYg&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=bmjjournals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multiple Sclerosis in an anaesthesiologist<\/a> from Trinidad and Tobago: MS incidence is higher among females, and the burden of the disease is high for any patient especially for someone working in \u201ca medical specialty with a high level of stress and long hours of exposure and night shifts.\u201d The patient, and the doctor, in this case writes:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cFor those who read this article, just be part of those who are disclosing this global health problem for the well-being of many.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Women around the world are facing significant health issues both as patients and doctors. Some emerging priorities for women\u2019s health globally are well outlined in this paper by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temmerman et al<\/a>.<sup>9<\/sup><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Restricted physical activity among women due to social norms<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco use, maternal smoking and COPD<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s cancers such as breast cancer, and cervical cancer<\/li>\n<li>Conditions of older age without adequate treatment<\/li>\n<li>Structural determinants of women\u2019s health<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Women in health are also celebrating today that we have come a long way to become anaesthesiologists, surgeons, gynaecologists and urologists.<\/p>\n<p>References:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Borick J.
