It w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as created by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/world-heart-day\/about-whd\/.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Heart Federation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to educate people about the actions they can take to prevent and control CVDs and to drive international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/cardiovascular-diseases-(cvds)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardiovascular diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, congenital heart disease, and deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2020.11.010\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from 2019, cardiovascular diseases \u201care the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> discusses nine modifiable risk factors, including low physical activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/world-heart-day\/get-involved\/world-heart-day-challenge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">challenge for World Heart Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> addresses this risk factor by asking people around the world to walk, run, or bike a heart shaped route. \u201cWhatever distance you make, every step counts for your heart health\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Activity-promoting environments<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This aligns with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/WHO-NMH-PND-18.5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WHO\u2019s Global Action plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to reduce physical inactivity by 15% until 2030 by creating active societies, environments, people and systems. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2020.11.010\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GBD study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recognised that this goal is influenced by many factors, including \u201ctransportation, education, urban planning, workplace health strategies, and environmental protection\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BMJ Open has published research related to this goal and factors that influence it. Let\u2019s look at the built environment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Does having a park near your home inspire you to walk or run more often? Does the presence of a bike lane encourage cycling to work or school?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A paper published in BMJ Open assessed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/11\/11\/e046271.long\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">association between built environment and physical activity in Latin American countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a multicentre cross-sectional study.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The author team assessed data from 9218 adults who reside in urban areas from eight countries in Latin America. This study found that people are more likely to be physically active if they lived within 20 minutes walking distance from sport facilities or childrens\u2019 playgrounds. Only 14.5% of the study\u2019s participants felt that their neighbourhood was adequately built for walking or cycling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/10\/11\/e035942.long\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A nationwide Canadian study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also found that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on average, people walk more in favourable ALEs [active living environments]\u201d. Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/4\/e013889.long\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a cross-sectional study from Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found a \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">clinically meaningful association between living in the most walkable neighbourhoods and having lower BMI in adults of all ages\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Making space<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/10\/6\/e034586.altmetrics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cross-sectional ecological analysis in New South Wales, Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> assessed data from over 5000 students from 43 primary schools and found better physical activity outcomes by increasing space up to 25 m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> per student and providing loose play equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cycling was the topic of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/2\/e024280\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">retrospective natural experimental study in Shanghai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and noted the importance of cycling-friendly built environments. This is echoed by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/8\/e007945.long\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> looking at interventions to increase cycling to work. This review synthesised 12 studies from six countries, differentiating between individual- and group-based interventions as well as environmental interventions.
