BMJ Open <\/em>marks a decade of influential open access research
\n<\/em>
\nFrom a Belgian survey, showing that many patients with\u00a0locked-in syndrome<\/a>\u00a0aren\u2019t necessarily unhappy, to a study showing that solo performers living the rock n roll lifestyle\u00a0are twice as likely to die young as their band members<\/a>, and everything in between,\u00a0BMJ Open<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0is marking a decade of influential open access research.<\/p>\n

The first of BMJ\u2019s open access titles,\u00a0BMJ Open<\/em>\u00a0was something of a trailblazer in the publishing industry in 2011. Its research has featured in parliamentary debates and influenced policy in health and social care in England.<\/p>\n

In 2015\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on NHS staff treating victims of trafficking prompted the development of NHS England guidance to help clinicians deal more effectively with them.<\/p>\n

In the same year, a\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0on parents\u2019 experience of stillbirths in UK hospitals sparked parliamentary debate on the need for the NHS to provide better care for grieving parents.<\/p>\n

Two studies, published in\u00a02016<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a02017<\/a>\u00a0in the journal, helped to influence UK legislation on the sale of energy drinks to children.<\/p>\n

And in 2019, the then Brexit Secretary, David Davies, felt compelled to take to social media following the publication of\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on the potential impact on the nation\u2019s cardiovascular health of Britain\u2019s decision to leave the European Union.<\/p>\n

Later that year, the then Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell referred to\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on the impact of poverty on rising death rates among children in the Queen’s Speech debate.\u00a0The same research\u00a0was picked up last year by Labour MP Mary Foy in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n

In 2020 Labour MP Marie Rimmer referenced\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0in the journal on organ transplantation in China during a discussion on the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill.<\/p>\n

Among the journal\u2019s\u00a0top 10 most mentioned articles<\/a>\u00a0is a study on the impact of\u00a0health and social care spending cuts on death rates in England<\/a>, while a study on\u00a0India\u2019s skilled health workforce headcount<\/a>\u00a0falling below WHO\u2019s recommended threshold attracted international attention.<\/p>\n

The relevance of the journal\u2019s research to world events is illustrated by two papers that rank among the title\u2019s\u00a0top 10 most mentioned articles, both of which continue to feature in media coverage: a comparison of cloth and surgical masks in healthcare workers<\/a>\u00a0and the significant health harms caused by using\u00a0rubber bullets for crowd control<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The perils of alcohol from cradle to grave<\/strong>
\nBMJ Open<\/em>\u00a0has always had a strong focus on public health and has published many articles over the decade on alcohol.<\/p>\n

These include the state of evidence on\u00a0light drinking in pregnancy<\/a>, a recommendation to cut back to\u00a0half a daily unit to save thousands of lives, and research showing that\u00a0women are catching up with men in how much they drink<\/a> and the associated impact on their health.<\/p>\n

One of the first studies to reveal that successful agers\u2500sociable, affluent, healthy over 50s are drinking at potentially harmful levels<\/a>\u00a0was published in the journal in 2015. Another revealed the\u00a0emotional impact on drinkers of different types of alcohol<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We are what\u2026and how we eat<\/strong>
\nThe nutritional content of food has also featured heavily over the decade, with research exposing the\u00a0sugar content of yogurts<\/a>\u00a0sold in UK supermarkets and that\u00a0ultra processed foods<\/a>\u00a0making up half of daily calorie intake among US adults.<\/p>\n

In 2018 research revealed that\u00a0slow eaters are more likely to shed the pounds<\/a>\u00a0to shed the pounds, while\u00a0fetal exposure to caffeine<\/a>\u00a0might be linked to childhood weight, suggested another study.<\/p>\n

A<\/strong>geing<\/strong>
\nAt the other end of the lifespan, a study on retirees revealed that the effects of\u00a0community group membership<\/a> were comparable to those of exercise for a long life. And while\u00a0air pollution in London is linked to a heightened risk of dementia<\/a>, a daily dose of aspirin may slow cognitive decline<\/a>\u2500at least in women.<\/p>\n

Sex and drugs\u2026without the rock n roll<\/strong>
\nIn 2012 US researchers concluded that\u00a0sleeping pills are associated with a significantly increased risk of death<\/a>\u00a0even for those taking fewer than 18 tablets a year. In 2017 researchers sounded the alarm on drugs commonly used to treat persistent heartburn and indigestion,\u00a0suggesting that\u00a0long term use of PPIs is linked to a heightened risk of death<\/a>. More recently, researchers concluded that the\u00a0benefits of multivitamins might all be in the mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n

BMJ Open <\/em>has not been afraid to publish studies on issues often considered to be taboo. In 2014, researchers tackled the\u00a0impact of pornography on coercive sex<\/a>\u00a0among young people, while the alarm was sounded for\u00a0misleading online advertising claims for \u2018designer vaginas\u2019<\/a>\u00a0in 2012. Researchers quantified the\u00a0impact of the menstrual cycle on women\u2019s working lives<\/a>, suggesting that it added up to 9 days of lost productivity every year.<\/p>\n

Men’s issues have been covered too. The journal\u2019s 1000th article to be published focused on\u00a0male pattern baldness and its link to heightened heart disease risk<\/a>. A receding hairline is nothing to worry about, the researchers concluded, but bald patches on the top of the head are more of a concern, particularly if they are extensive.<\/p>\n
