Its research has featured in parliamentary debates and influenced policy in health and social care in England.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/8\/e008682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/8\/e008682&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG-SH9cvMwBfC0ZQ0vYACnQ2N2uTA\">\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on NHS staff treating victims of trafficking prompted the development of NHS England guidance to help clinicians deal more effectively with them.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, a<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/2\/e002237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/2\/e002237&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEuUMmVkg7bBabXmIRJFQVBPXDGRg\">\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0on parents\u2019 experience of stillbirths in UK hospitals sparked parliamentary debate on the need for the NHS to provide better care for grieving parents.<\/p>\n<p>Two studies, published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/10\/e010380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/12\/e018136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/12\/e018136&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHyNLfkJhHLThEGRBuY8pBu4ZxhGQ\">\u00a02017<\/a>\u00a0in the journal, helped to influence UK legislation on the sale of energy drinks to children.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2019, the then Brexit Secretary, David Davies, felt compelled to take to social media following the publication of<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/1\/e026966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/1\/e026966&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH2DpGc1GUjta1jyeK6LA_uWsqfPA\">\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on the potential impact on the nation\u2019s cardiovascular health of Britain\u2019s decision to leave the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, the then Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell referred to<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/10\/e029424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/10\/e029424&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF3hIO2UftV3cAaMAX7TAKUG1v0qQ\">\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0on the impact of poverty on rising death rates among children in the Queen&#8217;s Speech debate.\u00a0The same research\u00a0was picked up last year by Labour MP Mary Foy in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 Labour MP Marie Rimmer referenced<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/2\/e024473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/2\/e024473&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFHtlY0Wj-QJDNGpOEFzFH8qWJrxg\">\u00a0research<\/a>\u00a0in the journal on organ transplantation in China during a discussion on the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill.<\/p>\n<p>Among the journal\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/pages\/bmj-open-10th-anniversary\/top-ranked-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" 10 most mentioned articles<\/a>\u00a0is a study on the impact of<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/11\/e017722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" illustrated by two papers that rank among the title\u2019s\u00a0top 10 most mentioned articles, both of which continue to feature in media coverage<a comparison of cloth and surgical masks in healthcare workers<\/a>\u00a0and the significant health harms caused by using<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/12\/e018154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/12\/e018154&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHQp8XeoA8Q12pnSpe-RXJI1akZLQ\">\u00a0rubber bullets for crowd control<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"m_1731305358290497801gmail-m_8066215728899385390docs-internal-guid-6502e7bb-7fff-f9c0-a0bd-a10933ef187a\">The perils of alcohol from cradle to grave<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>BMJ Open<\/em>\u00a0has always had a strong focus on public health and has published many articles over the decade on alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>These include the state of evidence on<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/7\/e015410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/7\/e015410&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGpevtc2zfsagx-dyehqEQndhfXKQ\">\u00a0light drinking in pregnancy<\/a>, a recommendation to cut back to\u00a0half a daily unit to save thousands of lives, and research showing that<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/10\/e011827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/search\/011827%2520jcode%253Abmjopen&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFfa51YW5gEL12Fx2Jpb1Gvcs7SKg\">\u00a0women are catching up with men in how much they drink<\/a> and the associated impact on their health.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first studies to reveal that successful agers\u2500sociable, affluent, healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/7\/e007684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/5\/7\/e007684&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFeOmtLNWJMgnd-tahBomB7zHjIgw\">over 50s are drinking at potentially harmful levels<\/a>\u00a0was published in the journal in 2015. Another revealed the<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/10\/e016089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/7\/10\/e016089&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFYCtf-TDRiglkc3ZPgdGnp_usCNA\">\u00a0emotional impact on drinkers of different types of alcohol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"m_1731305358290497801gmail-m_8066215728899385390docs-internal-guid-6502e7bb-7fff-f9c0-a0bd-a10933ef187a\">We are what\u2026and how we eat<\/strong><br \/>\nThe nutritional content of food has also featured heavily over the decade, with research exposing the<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/8\/e021387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/8\/e021387&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEssllTWDaT7zTPcK0tozrFCfpKCQ\">\u00a0sugar content of yogurts<\/a>\u00a0sold in UK supermarkets and that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/3\/e009892\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/3\/e009892&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFX7t0vTL3xZZeuT4ULAlB3R-ZMEw\">ultra processed foods<\/a>\u00a0making up half of daily calorie intake among US adults.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018 research revealed that<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/1\/e019589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/1\/e019589&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGj0MESjRYduqLGCphc34WJ2Zwi_w\">\u00a0slow eaters are more likely to shed the pounds<\/a>\u00a0to shed the pounds, while<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/3\/e018895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/3\/e018895&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG4qMDdJsOvPGhiiNcHkuXNuApsUA\">\u00a0fetal exposure to caffeine<\/a>\u00a0might be linked to childhood weight, suggested another study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong><strong id=\"m_1731305358290497801gmail-m_8066215728899385390docs-internal-guid-6502e7bb-7fff-f9c0-a0bd-a10933ef187a\">geing<\/strong><br \/>\nAt the other end of the lifespan, a study on retirees revealed that the effects of<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/2\/e010164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/2\/e010164&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF6APGca5eLj_9EgaA3ed9cRHJC3Q\">\u00a0community group membership<\/a> were comparable to those of exercise for a long life. Researchers quantified the<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/6\/e026186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/6\/e026186&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHEr7r3T4-wHsvlgn9O9VAQ13csmA\">\u00a0impact of the menstrual cycle on women\u2019s working lives<\/a>, suggesting that it added up to 9 days of lost productivity every year.<\/p>\n<p>Men&#8217;s issues have been covered too. The journal\u2019s 1000th article to be published focused on<a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/4\/e002537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/4\/e002537&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614761242107000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJlV5QqJTDAtHzaqum_m86RcWkqA\">\u00a0male pattern baldness and its link to heightened heart disease risk<\/a>.
