Life comprised of Zoom classes and daily doses of devastating news &#8211; climbing counts of COVID-19, the senseless killing of George Floyd, the unrelenting Australian bushfires, and divisive 2020 United States presidential election. Reflecting on these events, I was drawn to their unsung\u00a0heroes\u00a0\u2013 front-line workers who took a chance on the first COVID-19 vaccines, members of the budding BLM movement, firefighters who rescued both two- and four-legged habitants, and people who held on to hope for a better future and casted their vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-602\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmjleader\/files\/2023\/09\/Portrait-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Shirley Deng\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmjleader\/files\/2023\/09\/Portrait-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmjleader\/files\/2023\/09\/Portrait-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shirley Deng<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shirley is a PGY3 General Surgery resident at the University of Toronto.
