The lone figure at the front of the room, the name on the office door, the person expected to have the answers. Yet, when we listen closely to the stories of leaders across the Commonwealth and the world, a different picture emerges. True leadership is not a position; it is a practice grounded in community, curiosity, connection and courage.

The series is a collaboration with the Commonwealth Leadership Institute. It began with a simple but urgent question. What does health leadership look like today, and what must it become to survive the future?

Inside the conversations

The series begins with the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), Singapore. Over several months, we brought two generations together. Young leaders from across the Commonwealth and the CHI Leadership Council sat down in conversation with senior global leaders to explore the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

What became clear early on was not just the breadth of expertise, but the striking number of shared questions these leaders are navigating, even in very different contexts. They reflected on what leadership is becoming rather than what it used to be. They spoke about courage, kindness, uncertainty and connection. They highlighted the importance of context, collaboration and collective purpose. And they described futures where no single discipline or profession can solve the challenges ahead.

A mosaic of perspectives

The Commonwealth is home to one-third of the world’s population and reflects immense diversity in culture, politics, health systems and leadership traditions. Consequently, readers will notice that the voices in this series are as varied as the regions they represent.

You will find a fascinating contrast between the systems-innovation and data-driven lens prominent in the Singaporean interviews and the social-organizing and power-based frameworks explored by our global academic partners. These stylistic differences are intentional; they reflect the reality of global health: there is no single “right” way to lead, only a shared commitment to progress.

The journey ahead

This series captures a rare cross-sectional view of what unites us across regions and where we can learn from one another. We begin by hearing from some of today’s most experienced leaders through the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), whose insights help us understand what the present demands. As the series progresses, we will shift towards the young leaders across the Commonwealth.

This series does not attempt to define one model of leadership. Instead, it invites readers into a wider conversation about:

Leading with compassion: How to keep community at the centre of the system.

Navigating the “Grey Zone”: How to lead with purpose when crises overlap and the future is uncertain.

Empowering the next generation: How to turn supporters into active agents of change.

Sustainability and equity: How to build health systems that are both resilient and humane.

The power of together

The strongest thread running across the blog series is this. Leadership does not rest on any single individual. The real power lies in what we can achieve together.

Welcome to Leading Across the Commonwealth and Beyond.

We hope it informs, inspires and sparks new conversations about the future of health leadership.

Authors

Shermaine Ong Tsin Tze
Ben Collins
Jonathon Gray
Sian Reece

Declaration of Interests
Sian Reece: Serves as an Editorial Fellow for BMJ Leader and is a member of the journal’s editorial board.

Leadership in healthcare is often portrayed as a solitary endeavour.
