I also attempt to teach doctors to prefer short words when they are writing. So, when I found myself exchanging emails with an American doctor who insisted on referring to the <a title=\"COPE flowchart\" href=\"http:\/\/publicationethics.org\/flowcharts\" target=\"_blank\">COPE flowcharts<\/a> as algorithms, I was determined to teach him the error of his ways. But first, I needed some evidence. And now I am in a dilemma, because I also love obscure and confused <a title=\"Word origins\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wordwizard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">word origins<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Apparently the term &#8220;<a title=\"Algorithm\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algorithm\" target=\"_blank\">algorithm<\/a>&#8221; derives from a garbled form of the name of the <a title=\"Persian\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_language\" target=\"_blank\">Persian<\/a> mathematician <a title=\"al-Khwarizmi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al-Khw%C4%81rizm%C4%AB\" target=\"_blank\">al-Khwarizmi<\/a> who published an influential <a title=\"Treatise\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treatise\" target=\"_blank\">treatise<\/a> &#8220;<a title=\"On Calculation with Hindu numbers\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hindu-Arabic_numeral_system\" target=\"_blank\">On Calculation with Hindu Numbers<\/a>&#8221; in the 9th century. The trouble was, this <a title=\"Arabic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arabic_language\" target=\"_blank\">Arabic<\/a> work was translated into <a title=\"Latin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin\" target=\"_blank\">Latin<\/a> in the 12th century with the title <a title=\"Algoritmi de numero Indorum\" href=\"http:\/\/www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk\/HistTopics\/Arabic_numerals.html\" target=\"_blank\">Algoritmi de numero Indorum<\/a>. Readers mistook the transliteration of the author&#8217;s name for a Latin plural and invented the term &#8220;<a title=\"Algorismus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algorismus\" target=\"_blank\">algorismus<\/a>&#8221; to mean <a title=\"Calculation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calculation\" target=\"_blank\">calculation<\/a>. They then somehow got even more confused by muddling it with the Greek &#8220;<a title=\"arithmos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arithmos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">arithmos<\/a>&#8221; and turned the &#8220;s&#8221; into &#8220;th&#8221;. So from al-Khwarizmi we got <a title=\"algoritmi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/algoritmi\" target=\"_blank\">algoritmi<\/a>, then algorismus then algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>So now I have a dilemma. I simply love this story of misplaced scholarship, and will seek every opportunity to regale people with it. But that means I&#8217;ve got to go against my principal of short words and start referring to my lovely flowcharts as algorithms. Well, it&#8217;s only two <a title=\"Syllable\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syllable\" target=\"_blank\">syllables<\/a> longer (perhaps just one if you say it quickly)\u2026. and in the week when <a title=\"Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama<\/a> called on us to remember <a title=\"Civilization\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civilization\" target=\"_blank\">civilisation<\/a>&#8216;s debt to <a title=\"Islam\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam\" target=\"_blank\">Islam<\/a>, I reckon that&#8217;s a small price to pay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liz Wager<\/strong> is a freelance writer, trainer and publications consultant who works for a number of pharmaceutical companies, communication agencies, publishers and academic institutions.
