The researchers, from University College London, found that a third admitted significant abuse, such as frequent insulting and swearing, and only 3 out of 220 carers admitted occasional physical abuse.<!--more-->\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/health\/7842549.stm\">The BBC<\/a> has quoted an Alzheimer\u2019s Society spokesman as describing these findings as \u201cshocking\u201d, but said that many carers were under great strain. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/healthnews\/4315301\/People-caring-for-relatives-with-dementia-admit-abusing-them-research-finds.html\">The Daily Telegraph<\/a> quotes one of the researchers as saying that, \u201cthe vast majority of family carers do a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances\u201d. The UK government is\u00a0currently consulting on revising its policy on abuse by paid carers, but the researchers say that this study demonstrates the need for governments to tackle elder abuse by family carers.<\/p>\n<p>With the recent inauguration of President Obama, <a href=\"http:\/\/women.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/life_and_style\/women\/the_way_we_live\/article5593342.ece\">The Times<\/a> has picked up on a Christmas BMJ\u00a0about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/extract\/337\/dec16_1\/a2906\">left-right discrimination<\/a> in medicine. Obama is left handed and one of many US Presidents to be so. This has sparked the debate about whether left handed people are high achievers.
