Andy Holmes, double Olympic gold medallist rower had just died of Leptospirosis. After a long break away from the sport, he returned\u00a0two years ago\u00a0and, it seems, he caught\u00a0the disease through his renewed\u00a0contact with the sport.\u00a0It is relatively rare, with just 40 cases per annum in the UK, and is more of a hazard for agricultural and sewerage workers than rowers, but rowing organisations recognise the risk and provide information on their websites.\u00a0He was very unfortunate, and I only know of one other case associated with rowing, and that was many years ago.\u00a0<!--more-->Andy was part of the four that won Olympic gold in Los Angeles,\u00a0powering through the mist on Lake Casitas to overcome the Americans and\u00a0herald a new era in British rowing.\u00a0He went on to win gold again with Steve Redgrave in Seoul. I knew\u00a0Andy briefly when I was team doctor on\u00a0pre Olympic training camp earlier that year.\u00a0Even then,\u00a0I sensed he found\u00a0the intensity a little claustrophobic and it didn\u2019t surprise me when he took an extended break\u00a0 from the sport.\u00a0But rowing can be addictive and few ever completely escape \u2013 there\u00a0 is\u00a0something compelling about that mix of shared ambition,\u00a0physical endeavour and,\u00a0aesthetic pleasure. He went back to the sport that had consumed so much of his youth,\u00a0and it finally took his life at age 51.<\/p>\n<p>Others in that Olympic four are linked to the world of medicine.\u00a0Steve Redgrave,\u00a0fives times Olympic gold medallist, struggled with diabetes in the latter part of his career.\u00a0Martin Cross, one of the most dedicated and determined of British rowers, battled with his own psychological demons, vividly described in his autobiography \u201cSporting Obsession.\u201d\u00a0 Happily the fourth oarsman in the crew has had a more successful link with medicine: Richard Budgett, with a background in general practice, sports medicine clinical practice and research, is Chief Medical Officer for the 2012 Olympic Games.\u00a0We (the Northern Ireland squad) raced them\u00a0once (minus Richard Budgett),\u00a0when rowing was last a formal part of the Commonwealth games. It was a privilege, as sporting minnows to line up against the Olympic Champions and we were absolutely\u00a0dead level&#8230;at the start. We\u00a0never saw them again but it didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0It was enough to compete.<\/p>\n<p>Sporting glory is fleeting.\u00a0Champions die too.
