Instead medico-literary eyes are on a \u00a325k prize set to be awarded by a well-endowed medical charity next month. <a href=\"www.wellcome.ac.uk\">The Wellcome Trust Book Award<\/a>, which aims to celebrate medicine in literature, has just announced its 2010 shortlist for works of fiction or non-fiction on the theme of health, illness, or medicine.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Four of the shortlisted books &#8211; whose subjects range from the US healthcare system to medics in war zones such as Afghanistan &#8211; have already featured in the pages of the <em>BMJ<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/340\/bmj.c1598.full\">Reviewed back in March<\/a>, <em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/em>, by Rebecca Skloot (Pan Macmillan, \u00a37.99) tells the story of a black mother of five children who died young of an aggressive cervical adenocarcinoma.\u00a0 Before her death, cells were removed and, without her knowledge, became the first human cells grown in culture.\u00a0 Companies were set up to package and sell these so-called HeLa cells, and there are still billions of them in laboratories all over the world.\u00a0 Without the family\u2019s knowledge, these companies made millions.<\/p>\n<p>Also making millions \u2013 and then some more \u2013 are the US healthcare companies featured in Lionel Shriver\u2019s book <em>So Much for That<\/em> (Harper Collins, \u00a315). Shriver chronicles the travails of Shep, a New York suburban redneck, and his family as they navigate the healthcare system and face bankruptcy trying to meet the exorbitant cost of caring for a cancer patient. It even won over Karol Sikora, a consultant oncologist, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/340\/bmj.c2365.full\">reviewed the book for the <em>BMJ<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t read much and certainly not novels by American feminist writers. And I don\u2019t do books about people with cancer. But [this book] really shook me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Another <em>BMJ<\/em> reviewer &#8211; associate editor Christopher Martyn &#8211; may be surprised at the inclusion of Tim Parks\u2019 book Teach us to Sit Still (Harvill Secker, \u00a312.99) on the Wellcome shortlist. In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/341\/bmj.c4213.full\">frank <em>BMJ<\/em> review\u00a0<\/a>Martyn finds the book \u201clittle more than a long self absorbed account of the inner journey of a man desperately seeking meaning in and relief from chronic symptoms.\u201d Not one for the second edition\u2019s dust jacket then. Sales have yet to suffer: Parks\u2019 book is currently ranked 80 in Amazon.co.uk\u2019s top 100 best selling biographies.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Gareth Williams, a professor of medicine from Bristol, is also in the running for the prize. His book about smallpox Angel of Death (Palgrave Macmillan, \u00a318.99) was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/340\/bmj.c1582.full\">basis of a <em>BMJ<\/em> editorial <\/a>by Williams in March. Here, he called for the restoration of Dr Edward Jenner\u2019s statue to London\u2019s Trafalgar Square in recognition of his work developing a vaccine against the smallpox virus.
