{"id":48773,"date":"2020-10-09T17:03:09","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T16:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=48773"},"modified":"2020-10-27T12:49:41","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T11:49:41","slug":"abraar-karan-politics-and-public-health-in-america-taking-a-stand-for-what-is-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2020\/10\/09\/abraar-karan-politics-and-public-health-in-america-taking-a-stand-for-what-is-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Abraar Karan: Politics and public health in America\u2014taking a stand for what is right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"standfirst\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctors, scientists, and public health leaders are increasingly stepping into the fray and getting political, writes Abraar Karan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-46992 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2020\/03\/abraar_karan2020-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"155\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The world is watching America.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are living in a time when our government is run by a demagogue and our scientific, medical, and public health institutions are trying to desperately stay afloat long enough to survive with any shred of credibility or global respect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe2029812?query=featured_home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">took a stance unprecedented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in their history\u2014they openly sided on a presidential election, calling truth \u201cneither liberal nor conservative,\u201d and labeled our current political leaders as \u201cdangerously incompetent.\u201d The journal joins <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scientific American<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/scientific-american-endorses-joe-biden\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">endorsed Joe Biden for president<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the first time in their 175 year history of backing a candidate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also this week, William\u00a0Foege, former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American public health legend, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2020\/10\/06\/expert-cdcs-redfield-should-expose-trump-covid-failures-leave-post\/5899724002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote a letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the current CDC director Robert Redfield, which was released to the public by <em>USA Today<\/em>. In it, he says that the covid-19 response in the US will go down as a \u201ccolossal failure of the public health system of this country.\u201d He calls for Redfield to stand up to the administration, even if that means getting fired, so that his legacy won\u2019t be one in which he was a \u201cservant to a corrupt president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What we are seeing unfold now is an attempt by many medical and public health leaders to step in to avoid an impending crisis\u2014namely, the re-election of the Trump administration. Doctors, scientists, and public health leaders are taking hard stances against current American political leadership in an effort to protect their professions and their people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a physician who has both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2020\/04\/29\/abraar-karan-alone-with-our-patients-in-a-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cared for numerous patients with covid-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bwhbulletin.org\/2020\/07\/09\/brigham-resident-contributes-to-statewide-covid-19-response\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">worked on a state level covid-19 epidemic response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, of which much ends up being political, I know that there is no talking about health without talking politics, and vice versa. When I see patients, I do so knowing in my heart that many of them wouldn\u2019t be there if not for our failed response to this epidemic. This is personal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every attempt now by the Trump administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/10\/7\/trump-declares-experimental-coronavirus-drugs-cures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to take credit for covid-19 \u201ccures,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0or to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/election-us-2020-54427390\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">downplay the virus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, is a reminder why their dangerous incompetence has no place in the White House. It bears repeating: we are trying to control this outbreak in spite of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02800-9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">anti-science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/09\/16\/trumps-chinese-virus-slur-makes-some-people-blame-chinese-americans-others-blame-trump\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">xenophobic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> political party, not because of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/trump-contact-tracing-covid.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">covid-19 outbreak in the White House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a fitting, albeit unfortunate, culmination of what has been a reckless endangerment of public health for months. Trump and his colleagues rejected and continue to reject the fundamental pillars of how to control the virus: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/07\/politics\/trump-coronavirus-tests\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no masks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/05\/politics\/mike-pence-quarantine-trump-coronavirus\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no quarantining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/cars\/2020\/10\/06\/coronavirus-effect-trumps-travels-teachable-moment-masses\/3625184001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no isolation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/05\/health\/contact-tracing-white-house.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no contact tracing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/10\/05\/coronavirus-super-spreader-events-what-we-know-them\/3617277001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">close indoor activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/white-house-testing-regimen-did-not-protect-the-president\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inconsistent testing,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/09\/911188322\/trump-knew-seriousness-of-the-coronavirus-early-on-new-book-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">destruction of public trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, just to name a few. They are joined by other populist leaders with failed responses\u2014including the UK&#8217;s Boris Johnson\u2014as detailed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/371\/bmj.m3878\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a recent<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">editorial in <em>The BMJ<\/em>.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As medical professionals, what we do now at this very moment will have a major impact on the trajectory of this pandemic. How we leverage our credibility and commitment to science to counter dangerous threats to the health of our communities, even if those threats are within our own borders, right on our Twitter feeds or TV screens or voting ballots, will define the health of generations to come.
