{"id":46900,"date":"2020-03-18T16:48:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-18T15:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=46900"},"modified":"2020-03-23T19:52:37","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T18:52:37","slug":"rucira-ooi-even-hospital-settings-are-not-immune-to-xenophobia-amid-a-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2020\/03\/18\/rucira-ooi-even-hospital-settings-are-not-immune-to-xenophobia-amid-a-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Rucira Ooi: Even hospitals are not immune to xenophobia amid a pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"standfirst\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have to remember that it is not you against me, but us against the virus, says Rucira Ooi<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the outbreak of covid-19 began, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jan\/31\/spate-of-anti-chinese-incidents-in-italy-amid-coronavirus-panic\">reports of xenophobia and racism<\/a> against the Chinese population have been on the rise, especially in Western countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Xenophobic and fear mongering misinformation abounds on social media, yet even on more mainstream news reports, it seems rather uncanny that even now it\u2019s often Asian faces that are chosen to go with an alarming headline about coronavirus. It\u2019s understandable that the media wants to portray people in masks for \u201cvisual impact,\u201d but Asian people are not the only ones wearing masks. Pairing our faces with unsettling headlines only reinforces negative associations between Asian people and the virus, contributing to an othering of Asian people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this febrile environment, we\u2019ve heard <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2020\/01\/31\/coronavirus-chinese-xenophobia-racism-misinformation\/2860391001\/\">troubling reports<\/a> of attacks against people of Chinese heritage in multiple countries where Chinese people are deemed carriers of the virus at first glance. In France, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2020\/02\/03\/coronavirus-france-faces-epidemic-of-anti-asian-racism\">an online movement<\/a> of French Asians using the hashtag #<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JeNeSuisPasUnVirus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (translation: I am not a virus) began after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/science-health\/coronavirus-outbreak\/frances-ethnic-chinese-community-other-asians-complain\">one newspaper used inflammatory headlines<\/a>, such as \u201cAlerte jaune\u201d (translation: Yellow alert) and \u201cLe p\u00e9ril jaune?\u201d (translation: The yellow peril?), complete with an image of a Chinese woman wearing a protective mask.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In London\u2014a city known for its diverse population\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/singaporean-student-in-london-seeks-eyewitnesses-after-coronavirus-related-taunt-and\">news emerged of a Singaporean student being attacked<\/a> by a group of teenagers on Oxford Street. \u201cI don\u2019t want your coronavirus in my country,\u201d were the words the victim reported hearing as he was attacked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, even settings such as hospitals are not exempt from panic and the discrimination it brings with it. Casual racism and racial profiling take place in the NHS among healthcare professionals too. As a doctor of Chinese heritage working in the NHS, I have had my fair share of coronavirus related insults and discrimination. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the outbreak of the virus, I have been asked:\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHave you found the cure to coronavirus yet?\u201d and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDo you need any help with the coronavirus?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These may seem to be jokes, but behind every joke, there is a grain of truth. These insults have latched on and taken root at the back of my head ever since. It makes me feel as if I\u2019m being held responsible for a virus that happened to originate from a population that shares the same racial DNA as me. Some people may say that I am being overly sensitive or overthinking these comments, but does the fault lie in my reaction or in the words that prompted it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are entering a crucial time where the NHS will be in ever higher demand. Along with healthcare professionals up and down this country and across the world, I know that with the expected rise in the number of people with covid-19, I am likely to be even more exposed to the virus. In a country where the colour of my skin and my facial features are part of the minority, I can only pray that these will not be treated as if they are the \u201csymptoms\u201d of this coronavirus. Instead, we should ideally put our differences aside and make each other feel that we equally belong to a cohesive workforce that puts the virus at the focal point of our concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During this declared pandemic, colleagues and patients should stay focused. We have to remember that it is not you against me, but it is us against the virus. As it turns out, racism and xenophobia can, unfortunately, be just as contagious an infection as the virus itself.
