We, healthcare professionals, need to add our voices to theirs<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friday 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> September is Global Climate Strike. Students across the globe will go on strike to raise awareness of the climate emergency. We, healthcare professionals, need to add our voices to theirs, in order to highlight the absolute urgency of rapid government action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the last global school strike in May, the situation has worsened. Climate breakdown is accelerating faster than scientists had previously anticipated, with devastating effects on health. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The summer of 2019 saw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jul\/24\/summers-second-heatwave-set-to-break-records-across-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">record temperatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across the globe. These <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukhealthalliance.org\/heatwaves\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">heatwaves kill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, particularly affecting the elderly, those with chronic illnesses and the vulnerable. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/2019\/august\/experts-explain-the-effect-of-the-amazon-wildfires.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and forests in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-49646409\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bolivia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been burning at astonishing rates as a result of wildfires and human activity in an attempt to clear land for cattle ranching and agriculture. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/effects\/wildfires.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are just one way in which climate change affects human health. They are composed of numerous harmful chemicals, people fighting fires are exposed to heat related injuries and populations living in or near areas of wildfire have poorer mental health and a sense of isolation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are symptoms that the planet is critically ill and requires urgent attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Governments need to listen. Thus far they have neglected their responsibilities with depressingly inadequate policies. School children are going on strike to make themselves heard. And we, healthcare professionals, need to do all we can to support them. Our voices can amplify theirs; advocacy on behalf of our patients is a critical part of the service we provide to society. After all, doctors and nurses are consistently some of the professions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ct\/news\/documents\/2018-11\/veracity_index_2018_v1_161118_public.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most trusted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the public. No one else knows so well the financial and emotional costs of dealing with the health consequences of preventable tragedies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the UK, the healthcare community are slowly mobilising into action. In June, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2019\/08\/16\/zoe-steley-and-sandy-robertson-first-aid-for-the-climate-emergency-is-better-delivered-as-a-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">divested from fossil fuels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. There have been numerous BMJ opinion pieces and editorials highlighting all aspects of climate breakdown and environmental sustainability. And over 1000 doctors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jun\/27\/doctors-call-for-nonviolent-direct-action-over-climate-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote to <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> calling on politicians and the media to take action against the unfolding ecological crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now is the time to speed up this mobilisation. In the next few weeks, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UN 2019 Climate Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will take place, UK political party conferences will happen, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2019\/06\/20\/a-new-strategic-agenda-2019-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EU will meet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to discuss their new strategic agenda.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> These are crucial moments in the fight to prevent the worst impacts of climate breakdown and our leaders need to know that their populations are calling for action. Start this Friday by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medact.org\/event\/showing-the-health-community-supports-the-student-climate-strikers-september-actions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">joining your local climate strike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or supporting #fridaysforfuture on social media. Then educate yourself on climate breakdown, and begin having the difficult conversations with those around you. And lastly, for now, push for a government which prioritises action on the climate emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We may have eleven years to act if we\u2019re lucky, but it may be as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-protesters-should-be-wary-of-12-years-to-climate-breakdown-rhetoric-115489\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">little as five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This means that every day, week, and month count.
