The height of four double decker buses. Maya Gabeira entered the record books with this feat in 2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the first Guinness World Record for the biggest wave surfed by a woman. Gabeira also holds the world\u2019s first \u201cWorld Surf League Womens XXL Biggest Wave Award\u201d. Why was 2018 the first time a women received this accolade? Because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/big-wave-women-meet-the-female-surfers-fighting-sexism-on-the-beaches-smmnzd9dk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201csurfing has the reputation of being one of the most sexist sport\u2019s on the planet\u201d Sabrina Brennan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Califorian politician told <em>The Sunday Times<\/em>. For so long the masochism of surfing and the patriarchal structure it created has stopped women surfers competing. \u201cIt\u2019s too dangerous\u201d, \u201cwomen just aren\u2019t built for big wave surfing\u201d, \u201cit\u2019s life and death out there.\u201d Misogyny wrapped in the veneer of protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Committee for Equality in Women\u2019s surfing (CEWS), created by Brennan and some female surfers fed up with the status quo, helped to get women competing in big wave surfing, and earn equal pay. Gabeira still isn\u2019t sure of any difference however<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/big-wave-women-meet-the-female-surfers-fighting-sexism-on-the-beaches-smmnzd9dk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cpeople aren&#8217;t allowed to speak badly about women anymore. But do you [remove] that feeling out of society? No you just censor people. Sexism just takes different forms. It is generally men, after all, who have the power to hire you, give you an award, or include you in a contest.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This quote is not just applicable to the surfing world. This story is being told and re-told across many industries where men have been the dominating gender for generations. I recently attended a conference where out of the 66 audience facing opportunities (keynote speakers, panelists, and chairs) only nine were women. Four were BAME. It doesn\u2019t matter what speciality or type of conference this was, it\u2019s happening across too many of them. The manel (a term coined for the all male panel) is far too often seen at conferences. It has spawned numerous #manelwatch twitter pages and much outrage. It\u2019s depressing. And embarrassing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/360\/bmj.k254\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the last 17 years, more women have entered medical school than men <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">so why does this speaker imbalance still exist?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I asked one of the conference organisers who replied; yes we are aware of the imbalance, but it\u2019s a reflection of the makeup of our leadership\/senior clinicians, and it\u2019s difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s not wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)32110-X\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Women make up less than one quarter of hospital trust medical directors,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)32110-X\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">13% of clinical professors at universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/blogs\/far-women-come-higher-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">27% of head of institutes in higher education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/364\/bmj.l637\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">36% of hospital consultants.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When it comes to conference presentations, the results are no better. One paper looking at intensive care medicine congresses, from three continents, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccforum.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/cc11859\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">found female faculty members to be 6%, 15%, 25% and 35% respectively<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across the four main congress meetings. In Canada, when the proportion of Grand Rounds across five major Canadian academic centres were assessed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they looked at the standard of \u201cat least one\u201d female speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt least one!\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/8\/1\/e019796\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The result from 1296 rounds between 2011 to 2015 was 42%.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why does representation matter? The blindingly obvious answer is: because when half the population is female, but is not being seen in the same proportion in positions of authority, we will continue to be perceived as inferior and \u201cless than.\u201d We are wasting \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccforum.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/cc11859\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">half our genetic pool of intelligence, creativity and experience.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)32110-X\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Until we are truly equal, we are all diminished.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But do not despair dear reader. A change, it is a comin\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If we are to look at the trend over time, there is an increase in the proportion of women speakers at conferences. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2730476\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While still an underrepresentation, it is increasing.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perhaps the biggest change of all is that the discussion is taking place. So much so, that like CEWS, myself and four colleagues set up an initiative to address this very problem. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenspeakersinhealthcare.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Women Speakers in Healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d aims to make finding women speakers easy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have created a database of women speakers, from all professional backgrounds within healthcare, to help eliminate the reported &#8220;difficulty&#8221; of finding women speakers. To support those who are less confident at putting themselves forward, we ask for nominees when you sign up. Male allies, you too can sign up, show your support, nominate speakers, and spread the word. Much like Brennan, we aim to help lift each other up and change the status quo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ultimately, we want our organisation to be completely redundant one day. A day when all conferences have diverse representation across all domains including gender, ethnicity, and sexuality. When the leaders of our healthcare systems, education systems, and political systems represent the diverse and disparate backgrounds, population and workforce they serve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This day will come. It\u2019s not here yet. But perhaps it will be.
