Reading it could literally\u2014and this is the correct use of the usually misused word\u2014save the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book catalogues in beautiful, lyrical, readable writing how we are destroying the planet. A friend who has been concerned about climate change for 30 years told me that the book \u201cdoesn\u2019t contain anything new,\u201d but I\u2019ve convinced him, who had only scanned the book, that he\u2019s wrong. My friend was familiar with the general picture of the horrors that Wallace-Wells describes\u2014heat death, hunger, drowning, wildfire, unnatural disasters, loss of freshwater, dying oceans, unbreathable air, plagues, economic collapse, and systems failure\u2014but he did not know all the detail. The book is extremely well-researched and referenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the most comprehensive and best written account of how we are destroying the planet and ourselves that I know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plus the most original part of the book might be the second half discussing how we are failing to respond, why we are failing and what we might do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThree-quarters of a century since global warming was first recognized as a problem, we have made no meaningful adjustment to our production or consumption of energy to account for it and protect ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wallace-Wells repeatedly makes the point that the most unpredictable part of climate catastrophe is how we will respond. We may not know exactly what will happen if we allow the world to warm by 3C, as we are currently on track to do, but we do know it will be awful, killing billions, making the earth uninhabitable for most, and opening up the probability of species extinction. What we don\u2019t know is how humans as a species will respond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The response so far has been hopeless\u2014promises but insufficient action. But in Britain in the past few weeks there have been positive signs: the direct action and civil disobedience of Extinction Rebellion; the visit of Greta Thunberg; David Attenborough\u2019s programme giving the facts of climate change on peak-time television; the House of Commons voting in favour of declaring a climate emergency (pointless if action does not follow; and the government\u2019s scientific advisory committee recommending that Britain achieve net carbon zero by 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wallace-Wells\u2019s book is mostly painful to read, but he ends on a positive note: \u201cPersonally, I think that climate change itself offers the most invigorating picture, in that even its cruelty flatters our sense of power, and in so doing calls the world, as one, to action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><strong>Richard Smith<\/strong>\u00a0was the editor of <\/em>The BMJ<em style=\"font-size: 1rem\"> until 2004.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Conflict of interest<\/strong>: RS is an unpaid professor in the Institute of Global Health Innovation.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everybody reading The Uninhabitable Earth could literally (the correct use of a usually misused word) save the planet, says Richard Smith The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells is the only [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2019\/05\/10\/richard-smith-everybody-should-read-the-uninhabitable-earth\/\">More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":44585,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[266,955],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-44584","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-climate-change","category-richard-smith"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
