But like any tool, its work has to be properly directed<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2019\/03\/imran_khan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-44249\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2019\/03\/imran_khan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2019\/03\/imran_khan.jpg 160w, https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2019\/03\/imran_khan-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/363\/bmj.k4645\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s been argued that 85 percent of research spending is wasted,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> often through research not asking the right questions, or not being optimised for the right people. If we are to reduce that waste, we must better align the needs of society with the work of researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Different populations across the country have different health needs, which arguably aren\u2019t being heard and understood\u2014let alone met\u2014by the research community. Right now, the places where most health research is done also happen to be the places where people have the best health. Do the people undertaking that research therefore have the opportunity to hear from the people who have the worst health outcomes? If they did, would the UK\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.nesta.org.uk\/documents\/The-Biomedical-Bubble.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cpersistent north\u2013south divide in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> be as bad as it is now? In England, the annual economic cost of these inequalities is somewhere in the region of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.nesta.org.uk\/documents\/The-Biomedical-Bubble.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a355\u201370 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If research is only designed around researchers\u2019 needs, rather than society\u2019s, these inequalities can\u2019t\u2014and won\u2019t\u2014be remedied. But if we take a more people-centred approach to public engagement in research\u2014making research more focused on what people want, need, and care about\u2014we can start to address these inequalities and waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Austria, the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center used a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ois.lbg.ac.at\/en\/methods-projects\/crowdsourcing-research-questions-in-science\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">crowdsourcing approach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to identify novel research questions for mental health. It\u2019s a great acknowledgement that researchers\u2019 perspectives, in isolation, can be limited. By linking scientific research more closely to societal challenges, they aimed to reduce waste. And by publishing the details of their method online, they\u2019ve provided a blueprint for how others might work in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the University of Glasgow, just by talking to arthritis patients, researchers found that the patients actually <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.gla.ac.uk\/133350\/7\/133350.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wanted more research focused on the effectiveness of self-management strategies and arthritis-related fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, rather than just better drugs. This was an important finding in a field that has typically focused on pain relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are just a couple of examples, and it doesn\u2019t mean experts don\u2019t need to use their judgement and make decisions. But it does reveal that we can make our health research more effective by just listening to the public and asking them what they want and expect from science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By taking this kind of approach, the science we fund would benefit a much wider range of people.
