I know, I know. I can\u2019t bear it either. But this week might just be crunch time. Please, for a moment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for our future<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">read on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the 2016 referendum campaign neither side covered themselves in glory. But it was particularly easy for Leave to promise hypotheticals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the fantasy future in which the NHS was \u00a3350 million a week better off and we would all inhabit \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/buttonwoods-notebook\/2018\/02\/14\/those-brexit-cliches-explained\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sunlit uplands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two years on, the Brexit reality is starkly at odds with that rhetoric. Take the NHS. Far from boosting NHS funds, the health secretary revealed last week that Brexit has caused the NHS to start stockpiling fridges. Otherwise, our drug supply chain may be jeopardised, putting NHS patients at risk. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-asks-drug-companies-to-sign-no-deal-brexit-gag-clause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the government has been gagging UK pharmaceutical companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, preventing them from speaking out about Brexit contingency planning (NHS candour, anyone?). Nurses, doctors and other NHS staff are quitting the NHS in droves. And even the supply of hospital meals is threatened. Not quite the slogans so jauntily splashed on that bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The fact is, whichever way you voted, today\u2019s Brexit looks vastly different to the vague, seductive version that we were promised in 2016. Which is why if<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as many pundits believe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we are on the brink of an EU\/UK deal being struck and put to Parliament, relying on MPs to vote for or against it is not enough. Theresa May\u2019s Chequer\u2019s plan is utterly impenetrable, and Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s Brexit flip flops would fill a nation\u2019s worth of Shoe Lockers. Personally, at this stage, I\u2019m not sure I really trust any of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But what I do have faith in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">always have, always will<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is the British public. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a doctor, I spend my professional life carefully informing patients of the risks and benefits of medical interventions. If I didn\u2019t the General Medical Council would rightly want to know about it. Informed consent relies on evidence, not ideology. On facts, not spin. On reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s why I\u2019m relieved and delighted to see four MPs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarah Wollaston, Paul Williams, Philippa Whitford, and Phillip Lee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all of them <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">doctors, from across the political parties coming together to table an amendment to the House of Commons \u201cApproval Motion\u201d calling for this to be conditional upon a People\u2019s Vote. This amendment would require the British people\u2019s informed consent for whatever version of Brexit is finally proposed. In other words, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the nuts and bolts of what Brexit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">actually<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> looks like<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">so far removed from all that referendum hot air<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">would be put back to us, the people, for a second referendum. The choice would be simple. Vote either to accept the deal on offer or to remain in the EU. \u00a0Whatever the decision, at least<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at last<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we would have voted with our eyes open.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This matters and it matters now. The Approval Motion is the best opportunity for the \u00a0amendments to have legal effect to allow a referendum. If the motion is approved unamended, we would leave the EU on 29th March 2019 without any public say whatsoever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am launching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/members-of-parliament-urgent-amendment-to-secure-a-people-s-vote\">a public petition<\/a> supporting this amendment because the principle of informed consent underpins everything we do as doctors, respecting patients and putting them first. I would never treat a patient by keeping them in the dark, and imposing my wishes upon them. And I expect our elected representatives to show us, the electorate, the same basic respect, allowing our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">informed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> decisions to guide them. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/08\/Rachel_clarke2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-39970\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2017\/08\/Rachel_clarke2-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Rachel Clarke<\/strong> is a specialty doctor in palliative medicine.
