Despite being a term that is not used by clinicians, it is\u00a0widely-used internationally in communications with consumers. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/stress-anxiety-depression\/benefits-of-talking-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a>\u00a0in the UK, for example, provides consumers with an overview of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/stress-anxiety-depression\/types-of-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talking therapies<\/a>\u201d as does the UK<a href=\"http:\/\/research.healthtalkaustralia.org\/supported-decision-making\/talking-therapies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Mental Health Foundation.<\/a> It is also frequently used by the media (eg,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/talking-therapies-can-harm-too-heres-what-to-look-out-for-27433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Conversation<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychology.org.au\/for-the-public\/Psychology-Topics\/Anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psychology Today<\/a><u>)<\/u><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Professional associations such as the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/helpcenter\/understanding-psychotherapy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0American Psychological Association<\/a>\u00a0and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychology.org.au\/for-the-public\/Psychology-Topics\/Anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Australian Psychological Society<\/a>, however, use the term psychotherapy, or they name particular types of psychotherapy, for example, cognitive behavioural therapy.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Aside from self-help, all therapies for physical or psychological illnesses involve communication (talking) between health practitioners and clients. Good communication helps clients feel understood and improves treatment outcomes, irrespective of the illness.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>However, like pharmacotherapy and most other therapies for psychological disorders, psychotherapy involves more than the client talking. It involves the client \u201cdoing\u201d<i>\u00a0<\/i>something differently and making behavioural and\/or cognitive changes.\u00a0 Although talking can be a healthy coping strategy, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/03069885.2017.1343458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0talking things through with a friend<\/a>, talking on its own is not an evidence-based intervention for any mental illness.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The term \u201ctalking therapy\u201d misleads clients and gives them the expectation that the treatment for a psychological disorder will only require them to talk, when in fact it is the application of what is learnt in psychotherapy that results in improved functioning.\u00a0Some consumers remain in ineffective \u201ctalking therapy\u201d for longer than they should, believing that their attendance and talking, which usually feels good in the short term, is all that is needed to improve their symptoms.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>As well as misleading clients, the term\u00a0\u201ctalking therapy\u201d\u00a0is insulting to\u00a0psychotherapy practitioners.\u00a0We do not &#8220;dumb down&#8221; the names of other health therapies, for example, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.
