On 5 July, the birthday itself, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs70.nhs.uk\/buildings-to-turn-blue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">blue lights will illuminate buildings and historic monuments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> across the country, including Blackpool Tower, the Eden Project, and the Houses of Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The BBC broadcast a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/b0b8cdgn\/nhs-at-70-live\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">90 minute live special<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Michael Sheen, Martin Freeman, Celia Imrie, and Tamsin Greig have starred in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0b7x2nt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a film poem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2018\/26\/life-on-the-ward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michael Mosley, Stacey Dooley, and Ann Widdecombe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have experienced life at King&#8217;s College Hospital. And BBC radio is broadcasting a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0b7mxnq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">20 part series on the NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b0b86s0j\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">symphony composed entirely from sounds of the NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, words of staff and patients, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebachchoir.org.uk\/news\/celebrating-the-nhs-70th-birthday-with-bbc-radio-3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">choir of NHS staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-42512\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2018\/07\/background-816x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"209\" \/>For its part, <em>The BMJ<\/em> has collaborated with the BMA to commission <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2808\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an interactive artwork<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that visualises what the NHS spends on supporting us as patients throughout our lives (see video below). We conducted a poll to find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2770\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what readers think is the NHS\u2019s greatest achievement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Nick Timmins has written <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2683\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a thoughtful essay that puts doctors&#8217; 70 year relationship with the NHS into perspective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2768\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abi Rimmer has spoken to a surgeon who qualified the same month as the NHS started<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her weekly column, Margaret McCartney argued that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2740\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the NHS\u2019s slow decline is a preventable disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A cultural historian has discussed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2018\/04\/18\/the-nhs-at-70-its-greatest-achievements-and-the-power-of-individual-stories\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how the meaning of the NHS has changed over time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2018\/06\/28\/jennifer-crane-whose-needs-histories-of-need-in-the-national-health-service\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what \u201cneed\u201d has meant in the NHS over its history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NHS at 70 marble run\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EsDpqNZpCvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A series of articles have looked at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k1540\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">whether it is possible to sustain the NHS and retain its core principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2373\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how funding of the NHS has changed and how we should assess how much is enough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2566\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what options are available for achieving an adequately funded NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-42513\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/files\/2018\/07\/NHS_cake.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"169\" \/>We\u2019ve also run a set of \u201cprovocation\u201d articles, settling out radical ways the NHS needs to change, from doctors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k1757\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">giving up professional protectionism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">overhauling the consultant on-call system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2206\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">embracing new technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to health services <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2472\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">transforming outpatient services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2355\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">giving nurses more responsibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We\u2019ve also looked at arguments that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2663\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it is, as yet, nowhere near crisis point<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k1685\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fly the flag in post-Brexit Britain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and pondered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/361\/bmj.k2106\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how it might look in 2028<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And I\u2019ve written <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/newsroom\/health\/70-years-british-national-health-service\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a piece for the Magnum Photos picture agency looking at the visual legacy of the NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of <em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s NHS at 70 coverage from the past three months is collected <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/nhs-at-70\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
