Despite having previously worked for England Rugby, played, coached, and officiated rugby, I support this call. Last autumn, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2017\/09\/25\/allyson-pollock-and-graham-kirkwood-tackle-and-scrum-should-be-banned-in-school-rugby\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pollock and Kirkwood renewed the call<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, based upon emerging evidence, to remove the tackle from physical education rugby. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the responses to Pollock and Kirkwood\u2019s piece highlighted the importance of rugby in increasing the levels of physical activity among younger people. UK chief medical officers, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/50\/4\/200\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">particularly Catharine Calderwood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, are rightly concerned by increasing obesity trends, the prevalence of physical inactivity, and the impact this is having on children\u2019s health. Importantly, however, the issue is about removing the tackle from schools\u2019 physical education only. Therefore, if the tackle were removed from school physical education, then other non-contact activities would fill the void in the physical education curriculum, which could include touch rugby. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@adamjohnwhite\/the-call-to-remove-tackling-from-schools-rugby-some-myths-and-misconceptions-80fe6abd6ed5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The removal of the tackle would not lead to physical inactivity or obesity and the implication that it will is not supported by evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Additionally, we must also remember that injury is a cause of physical inactivity; with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/51\/7\/600\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">49% of injuries requiring in excess of 28 days of absence from play in the most recent schoolboy study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many have suggested that refining the tackle technique and coaching education are the solution to reducing instances of concussion. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2017\/10\/11\/bjsports-2017-097912\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matthew Cross and colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have found that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JeeeT2nt4Pg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">passive tackle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the safest form of tackle to make in the elite game. Unfortunately, the passive tackle is also the least effective for performance, suggesting that it may not be the answer in competitive sport. They also comment, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com.winchester.idm.oclc.org\/content\/early\/2017\/10\/11\/bjsports-2017-097912\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most effective, although extreme, method for preventing concussion would be to eliminate exposure by removing the tackle from the game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&#8221; Yet, in the context of professional sport, they suggest that it would be detrimental to the identity of the sport (and I would agree). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But school physical education is not about the development of sport, and therefore the integrity of the sport&#8217;s identity and traditions must be secondary to the safety and wellbeing of young people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I recognise that rugby has many benefits and, while I challenge the value of tackling in school rugby,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-Rugby-World-in-the-Professional-Era\/Nauright-Collins\/p\/book\/9781138665446\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I have previously written about how rugby is socially positive regarding gender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. With any risky activity, it is all about the balance of benefits and risks and we need to weigh up the benefits of an activity in relation to the costs or harms associated with it. The pros versus cons discussions on tackling in school physical education are welcomed and needed, yet they need to be based upon evidence and focused upon the specific call\u2014the removal of the tackle in school physical education. Currently, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/51\/7\/600\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">epidemiological studies can show the injury costs associated with tackling in school rugby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. However, the evidence of the unique benefits of tackling in school rugby are currently not presented or proven. The proponents of the game should make the case for why we must include tackling and the benefits associated with doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The chief medical officers and the Physical Activity Expert Group have commented, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportcic.com\/cmo-response.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Committee \u2026 \u00a0do not feel rugby participation poses an unacceptable risk of harm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,&#8221; which is a similar position to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/51\/15\/1134.info\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quarrie et al<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This may be true in the community game, whereby children and\/or their parents voluntarily engage in the activity. But rugby is a compulsory part of school physical education. Molcho and Pickett suggest that &#8220;unnecessary&#8221; risks are not acceptable for children. With there being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/national-curriculum-in-england-physical-education-programmes-of-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no legal requirement for tackling in school physical education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, coupled with no evidenced benefits of tackling, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/injuryprevention.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2018\/01\/23\/injuryprev-2017-042672\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the heightened risk associated with it are clearly unnecessary for children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The debate on whether the tackle should be removed from physical education rugby in school is likely to continue. I think it is important to consider, discuss, and challenge many of the arguments being offered on this issue.
