{"id":41459,"date":"2018-02-21T11:29:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T10:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/?p=41459"},"modified":"2020-03-06T16:33:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T15:33:06","slug":"tom-jefferson-and-peter-doshi-rip-pubmed-commons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bmj\/2018\/02\/21\/tom-jefferson-and-peter-doshi-rip-pubmed-commons\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Jefferson and Peter Doshi: RIP PubMed commons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four years ago, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncbiinsights.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2013\/10\/22\/pubmed-commons-a-new-forum-for-scientific-discourse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launched a pilot project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to \u201cleverage the social power of the internet to encourage constructive criticism and high quality discussions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedcommons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> allowed readers to post signed comments below any of the 28 million citations indexed in PubMed and was democratically dubbed \u201cCommons\u201d. But earlier this month, the NIH announced it was going to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncbiinsights.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2018\/02\/01\/pubmed-commons-to-be-discontinued\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discontinue PubMed Commons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are saddened by the news. PubMed Commons offered an avenue for so-called \u201cpost-publication peer review,\u201d in which the wider community can openly discuss and critique papers after they are published, not limited by the bounds of traditional letters to the editor. Considering that few journals offer this kind of golden opportunity to interact (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/rapid-responses\"><em>The BMJ<\/em>\u2019s rapid responses<\/a> being one of the exceptions) PubMed Commons\u2019 platform for open, frank discussion\u2014the very essence of real science\u2014seemed a slam dunk initiative. It was an easy way of commenting in a timely fashion on something of interest or even a way of challenging the written word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But PubMed Commons is being shut down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reasons NIH cites for the closure are disturbing. Despite having millions of users every day and over 28 million citations, only 6,000 articles were commented on. This \u201clow level of participation does not warrant continued investment in the project,\u201d the NIH said, and is a mere fraction of the 54,000 or so comments available on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PubPeer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a research discussion platform launched in 2012<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an interview, Jerry Sheehan, deputy director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), which runs PubMed Commons, added that \u201cbudgets are always tight,\u201d and that \u201csignificant effort and cost\u201d would be associated with bringing PubMed Commons along in a planned \u201cnew, reengineered PubMed.\u201d \u00a0Finally, according to Sheehan, NLM is planning to focus its resources by investing in increasing data access and transparency through ClinicalTrials.gov (the trial register run by NLM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are curious to understand why PubMed is a place to find studies and other platforms are the place to criticise them. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2018\/02\/02\/pubmed-shuts-comments-feature-pubmed-commons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PubPeer told Retraction Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that one of the reasons for the low level of commenting on PubMed Commons may be that since 2013 PubPeer allows anonymous posting of comments while the Commons did not. According to the PubPeer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/static\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, this \u201cled to the exposure of unexpected levels of research misconduct\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We think it is a shame that Commons will be no more, although the comments will remain accessible (both through PubPeer, which mirrored the Commons content, and also via download from the NIH\u2019s website). We hope PubPeer, a California registered not-for-profit initiative stays afloat, as we are contemplating pursuing post-publication peer review as a possible radar screen for distorted trial publications. Here\u2019s the plan: soon we will be launching our RIAT Support Center. RIAT stands for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/346\/bmj.f2865\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Restoring Invisible and Abandoned Trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and is an initiative we first outlined in 2013. The basic idea is to identify clinical trials which have never been published (invisible), or trial publication that report trials in a biased or distorted manner, and for which no one takes responsibility to correct the record (abandoned). Once the trial is identified, following a set of transparent procedures, the trial is reported in a way that allows a full assessment of the data, i.e. it is restored. Four restorations have already been published (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/4\/5\/e004385.full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CEA Second-Look Trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/351\/bmj.h4320\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Study 329<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0167609\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8-Way Trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0189978\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diclectin pivotal trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and we will have funds to support more over the next three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identification of worthy targets is therefore the start and we plan to use different means, including public comments, to do so. The types of discussions and contributions which are available in Commons-type sites will alert us to a possible need to correct the written word.
