Season 2 of Netflix\u2019s <em>The Crown<\/em>, culminates with the Profumo affair. It is 1963, six years after The Medical Research Council had published a statement announcing \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/1\/5034\/1523\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a direct causal connection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d between smoking and lung cancer, and that scene sadly foreshadows Keeler\u2019s recent death from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2017\/dec\/05\/christine-keeler-former-model-at-heart-of-profumo-affair-dies?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. There is, understandably, a lot of smoking in <em>The Crown<\/em>\u2014in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcplondon.ac.uk\/projects\/outputs\/fifty-years-smoking-and-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1962<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 70% of men and 43% of women smoked. The consequences are not concealed, the first season dealing with King George VI\u2019s death from lung cancer. His father before him had died from emphysema in 1936. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Successive generations failed properly to heed the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcplondon.ac.uk\/projects\/outputs\/fifty-years-smoking-and-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smoking kills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d message\u2014action was taken but slowly. Christine Keeler\u2019s betrayal by the political establishment is echoed by the tardy establishment response to an unequivocal health message. The Ministry of Health in 1956 had fully acknowledged the facts about the health risks, although the spokesman made this announcement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/policy_seminar_report_smoking.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">while smoking a cigarette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, repeating the government\u2019s position that &#8220;we cannot interfere with what is a matter for the individual.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a temptation to instrumentalise the deaths of notable people\u2014to use them to raise awareness, stimulate action, promote donations to the relevant charity. A strange ambivalence too; sadness at the death while grimly accepting another \u201crecruit\u201d to the cause. Christmas is just passed and it wouldn\u2019t have been Christmas without \u201cChestnuts roasting on an open fire\u201d, though Nat King Cole\u2019s voice was silenced by lung cancer in his mid-40s. George Harrison, the best Beatle, died at just 58 from lung cancer\u2014a mournful thought whenever \u201cHere comes the sun\u201d comes on the radio. If you enjoyed \u201cThe Bloody Chamber,\u201d imagine another 25 years of novels by Angela Carter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The temptation is even greater in COPD. Despite being the world\u2019s third<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0leading cause of death it has a low status and a low profile. Characterised as a self-inflicted condition, it is much more common in poorer people. There are few famous faces associated with it\u2014Leonard Nimoy, Liz Dawn, and now Christine Keeler. The cause and effect are distant in time. &#8220;The Crown&#8221; reminds us that most people start smoking when they are young. It is evident that smoking is not &#8220;a matter for the individual&#8221; but an addiction of childhood\u2014recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ntr\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/ntr\/ntx243\/4591649#107023742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> suggest around two thirds of people who try a cigarette will go on to become regular smokers.
